We are in the process of rebuilding the SP 3602 dome car.

A brief history

SFR acquired the car from Jon Clark in {may?] of 2022. The car is currently in southern California, waiting on routine work (and related parts) to enable shipment by freight rail to Oregon. The rebuild will be performed at the Lavacot Industrial Park in Independence, Oregon.

Where we are today

We are just getting started. So far our team has participated in the COT&S update (Clean, Oil, Test and Stencil). This is periodic work on the air brake system that is required to move the car.

The project should be considered more of a rebuild than a restoration. We expect that we will need to address the side sills, end sills, collision posts and probably many of the body parts of the car.

Interior

The loose parts are not part of the car, they are just being stored here.

Key points:

  • The glass has been badly vandalized and will be replaced.

  • The Amtrak 1970's decor is largely still present, and will be replaced.

  • Most of the interior fixtures were removed by a previous owner. Fortunately a couple of patterns are still there.

Exterior Corner

In this picture the substantial corrosion of structural components is obvious. Some of the pieces might be salvageable, but many will need to be fabricated and welded into place.

A piece of the stainless side sheet has been removed for inspection of the material behind it. Also on this end of the car the end sheathing does not exist.
