Art instruction helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making abilities, and inventiveness. In elementary art, we explore how the 7 Elements of Art (Line, Shape, Color, Value, Texture, Space) are used to create the 7 Principles of art Art (Balance, Pattern, Rhythm, Movement, Emphasis, Contrast, Unity/Variety). Within this exploration, students study a variety of famous artists, famous art pieces and art materials.
In art class, students are expected to...
Come in quietly ready to learn.
Be silent during instruction.
Become silent when the teacher calls for their attention.
Respect their classmates, their teacher and their art supplies.
Try their best with NO complaints.
Compliment their classmates' artwork in a meaningful way.
Work with inside voices without having to be reminded.
Line up silently without having to be reminded.
Artists of the week are students who exhibit all 8 expectations while in art class. These students will receive a prize and a note to take home
Classes that exhibit 6 out of the 8 expectations will earn a Golden Paw for their class. Goldlen Paw goals and rewards are determined by their classroom reacher.

I’m excited to share that we will be hosting Art Night this year on Monday, March 30, starting at 5:30 p.m. We have some big plans for the evening and could use your help! Throughout the year, we’ll need assistance with 0rganizing, labeling, and hanging student artwork as well ass setting up the night of the show.
If you’re interested, please email me at slthompson@greenville.k12.sc.us. I’ll send you a list of tasks that can be done both throughout the year and on the day of the event. Important: You must be a Level 2 Volunteer and be available to help during the school day.
Thank you for your continued support of the Arts—I’m looking forward to a fantastic Art Night!
