Well, we actually might, since Elodin does seem to know Auri from before even Kvothe met her. And as things are, if this books comes up as a precuel*cross fingers*, we might end up seing how those two met or something like that, only time will tell though, I may be guessing too too much.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. The scenes with Auri are some of my favorites in the series, and I am thrilled beyond thrilled at the prospect of a Coraline-sized book of her! And in October/November, just in time for my birthday! Thanks for listening to that niggling half-storyworm.

It has taken every ounce of self control in my body not to totally spoil this announcement for everyone after you told us about in at the Paul and Storm show in Portland. It is a testament to the amount of respect that I have for you that I did not.

Cannot express how thrilled I am by your news. Even made me a bit teary, i must say.

To them that demand you finish book 3, I say piffle! You are a conductor of greatness, listening to your tales & developing them in the manner that best fits them. Bravo!

Patrick, are there any, well, *spoilers* of a sort about Auri in SRoST? Is it stand-alone? Could someone *not* read it and still know everything they need to make the KK trilogy end in a neatly tied bundle?

Logged in for the first time in along time to put this down, but Pat you could write the menu for a restaurant and I would pay good money to read it. Please continue writing whatever your heart desires and know that fans like me will be patiently waiting to read it.

Needless to say, K was very encouraged by it, especially the idea that yes, yes it IS okay and even possible to succeed at writing the things that YOU want to write, not just what everyone else thinks you ought to write.

The description/birthing of this story reminds me of the night in The Eolian when Kvothe plays a trick on the untrained guests in the room. His fellow musicians appreciated it to the fullest, but some were angered by it. I look forward to it and hope to discover that I am the type of person who thoroughly enjoys it.

Why in the world would you expect that a story about Auri would be anything but strange? Also I can commiserate with having a story (or rather entire working universes) trapped in your brain, and the need to get it out before it drives you crazy(er). Fortunately for you, writing is a thing you can do. Like, really well.

I want desperately to read all of these things. I want to read them alone on my bed, all in one sitting, with my phone on silent and all the clocks turned off. And I want to read them slowly, with voices, to my girlfriend on long car rides.

we are building our own little analysis framework using root and are wondering why creating, filling and writing several thousand histograms seems to be very fast. But having them then and closing the file takes ages, much longer than the whole analysis before. Is this normal or could it be we are doing something absolutely wrong?

In case it is a normal thing: what causes the closing of the files to be so slow. The files are smaller that 10MB although they contain several thousands of histograms. Is this a matter of the number of objects in the file? How can we improve the performance than?

If that is inconvenient for you I can also put it somewhere on the web. In these versions most of the histograms are not filled, however closing the files is slow anyhow. I also checked if there are perhaps many cycles of the same histograms that are constantly overwritten, but this seems not to be the case.

I looked at your file and did not see anything special except the big number of histograms: 328 directories, 864 TH2 and 6048 TProfile.

My guess is that you should be able to write these objects and close the file in about 1 or 2 seconds. What do you mean by slow? minutes?

Do you count in the closing time the time to write the histos or simply the time to file.Close() ?

Yes there are a lot of histograms and directories. To be able to be more precise I am doing some timing studies right now with a TStopwatch. 1-2 seconds would be great but for a simple test it took more than about one minute (real time) including writing. However writing itself seems to be very fast, it just takes a few seconds at most, I get a printout after Write() and one after Close() for the File ToTAsymmetryAnalysis.root and Write() is done in about 1-2 seconds whereas Close() is much slower. But I will tell you exactly when the big test ran through.

Looking at your code in CTB_AnalysisV3::ToTAsymmetryFinalize, I see that are you are doing the bookkeeping of the histograms in your own array (in addition of the normal bookkeeping by ROOT).

You can remove the normal ROOT bookkeeping by calling

I tried to set TH1::AddDirectory(kFALSE) now and it seems that closing the first file (ToTAsymmetryAnalysis.root) is much faster (6 seconds). Unfortunately it works only when not filling the histograms because I use the TDirectory::Get method in CTB_AnalysisV3::DoAsymmetryAnalysis to find the right histograms to be filled in the loop, which seems to depend on the ROOT bookkeeping, so that I get a segmentation fault without it.

I tried to do it with and without deleting the histogram array before and what happens is:

the file closes faster, but somehow I lose all the directories and histograms then. In the file are only the top level directories Data and MC. Everything else is gone :-/

Ask MetaFilter is a question and answer site that covers nearly any question on earth, where members help each other solve problems. Ask MetaFilter is where thousands of life's little questions are answered.

It was the beginning of August when I learned that the tech layoffs of 2023 had finally reached my doorstep and that my position at Tata Consultancy Services was made redundant as part of a corporate restructuring. This happened right after I got done moving in together with my significant other and right ahead of an upcoming trip to Europe. So naturally, I did what anyone in my position would do, which is to panic apply to any job posting that sounded even vaguely like what I was doing before only to discover what a slow job market we are in right now.

After a conversation with my father over the phone, I learned to step back, to accept the situation I was in, and that being laid off at this time actually was not the worst thing that could have happened to me.

I've had a couple interviews recently. We mutually decided that I wasn't the best fit for the positions I was interviewing for. I thought back to my recent experience, including both my recent time at as a tech consultant TCS and my product management internship at Emerson Electric Company. It was then I realized I want to focus on breaking into product management using the professional groundwork I built.

Career switching is a challenge, especially if you have developed any sort of specialization. Yet, this is not the first career switch I've ever done in my life. I managed to make the jump from being a very technical mechanical engineer to consulting. Anything I do going forward will be a less drastic shift.

To the best that I can, I make sure to contain career-development activities to normal working hours from 9 to 5. Outside of those hours, I focus on my relationship and my physical and mental health.

And I also make sure I go to bed knowing I at least accomplished something, be it related to career development (e.g. doing a mock interview, applying to a job, making a networking phone call, etc.) or otherwise (e.g. making sure my herb garden is thriving).

This is the first layoff I've undergone in my life. I have people close to me who have been laid off (sometimes even more than once!) before, and they all agreed that while the layoff was difficult when it happened, they consistently managed to find roles that were bigger and better than what they were doing before. This is definitely one of the harder things I've gone through in my life. I just have to focus my energies the right way and have a modicum of faith that things will work out in the end.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a novella published in book form. It is about Auri, Rothfuss himself says that this is not the place to start with his work, and it absolutely is not. This novella is strictly for the fans. That would be us then.

Joy Buolamwini: When I was earning my academic degrees and learning to code, I did not have examples of ethical data collection. Basically if the data were available online it was there for the taking. It can be difficult to imagine another way of doing things, if you never see an alternative pathway. I do believe there is a world where more AI researchers and practitioners exercise more caution with data-collection activities, because of the engineers and researchers who reach out to the Algorithmic Justice League looking for a better way. Change starts with conversation, and we are having important conversations today about data provenance, classification systems, and AI harms that when I started this work in 2016 were often seen as insignificant.

Buolamwini: I cannot stress enough the importance of documentation. In conducting algorithmic audits and approaching well-known tech companies with the results, one issue that came up time and time again was the lack of internal awareness about the limitations of the AI systems that were being deployed. I do believe adopting tools like datasheets for datasets and model cards for models, approaches that provide an opportunity to see the data used to train AI models and the performance of those AI models in various contexts, is an important starting point.

I do not think you make change in the world by only talking to people who agree with you. A lot of the work with AJL has been engaging with stakeholders with different viewpoints and ideologies to better understand the incentives and concerns that are driving them. The recent U.K. AI Safety Summit is an example of a strategic cooperation where a variety of stakeholders convened to explore safeguards that can be put in place on near-term AI risks as well as emerging threats. 006ab0faaa
