Education & Outreach activities

In Gujarat state, human-sloth bear conflict has been a recurring issue, particularly in areas where local tribal communities reside near sloth bear habitats. The WCB Research Foundation launched the "Aatamavat Sarvabhuteshu" project to reduce conflict and foster coexistence between humans and sloth bears by engaging local tribal communities near sloth bear habitats. The community education and outreach programme was started in central Gujarat in late 2019 and has involved activities like creating an outreach center, educating children, training forest staff, enhancing community awareness and designing materials for conservation efforts and transforming perception. The project will continue in other parts of the sloth bear distribution range in western India from December 2023 with new educational materials and safety measures. Join us to help communities and promote human- sloth bear coexistence.

The Bear Book

The Fun Learning ACTIVITY BOOKLET with information on Bear species, Sloth bear habitat and habits are illustrated through fun learning activities. These booklets are distributed as takeaways to primary-grade kids along with our education programs. The book includes the activities such as word search, a hungry bear maze, colouring, joining the dots etc. We believe that such activities may in still positive attitudes among the children and build a strong pillar supporting our goal.

Sloth bear Pocket booklet

A pocket booklet on sloth bear is consisting of basic information about the ecology of sloth bear. The book provides true knowledge about the sloth bears to people neighbouring sloth bear habitat and tourists visiting sloth bear landscapes. The book also contains the information on signs indicating sloth bear presence, do's and don'ts in the sloth bear habitat and how to avoid sloth bear attacks.

Comic leaflet

This comic leaflet is a story on sloth bear with a takeaway message. These comic leaflets are distributed as takeaways to school kids of primary grade.

Pocket guide for forest field staff

This pocket field guide is helpful to the frontline forest field staff working in the sloth bear landscape. The book contains the information about sloth bear ecology, techniques of population monitoring and how to deal with human-sloth bear conflicts. More than 500 books are distributed among the field staff of Gujarat.
