The Great AGventure
North SLO County
For over 20 years, the SLO County Educational Committee has presented “Great AGventure” – North County. Held the second Wednesday in October, at the Paso Robles Events Center, over 1200 fourth grade students from 45 classes, teachers and chaperones from the north county enjoy an educational, hands-on agriculture field day. Classes are assigned to a rotation of six 20-minute presentations covering subject areas as an arena event, farm animals, farm machinery, crops, science and an “AG-tivity”. Each presentation is provided by volunteer professionals who share their agricultural expertise directly with each class. Some presentations include butter making, owl pellet discovery, petting a calf, learning about soils, horsepower, apple grafting, water resources, grape history, weather, bees and farm machinery.
South SLO County
The Great AGventure – south county, is in its ninth year and operates the same as the Great AGventure – north county, only on a much smaller scale. Held the second Friday in May at the Arroyo Grande High School Tech Department, Great AGventure – south, hosts 15 fourth grade classes with over 500 students, teachers and chaperones. The Arroyo Grande FFA students play an integral part of the event as they assist in presenting the farm animals, roping and acting as rotation leaders with the classes.
These Great AGventure events are hugely popular and help to educate our county’s youth as to the importance of the bountiful San Luis Obispo County agricultural industry.
