I am Kesav Unnithan, a researcher at CSIRO, working on land-to-ocean outflows and impact on coastal water quality. Here, I share my journey in environmental research, along with the insights that continue to inspire me.

The intelligence of our environment fascinates me and fills me with wonder. What often appears complex at first gradually reveals its layered yet simple nature, provided we make an uncompromising effort to satisfy our curiosity. My work follows this adaptive and iterative approach, starting with crude assumptions, refining them through exploration, and pursuing clarity until comprehension achieves stability across space and time.

My academic journey began in Computer Science, before I was introduced to the practical applications of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) under the expert guidance of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). For my PhD, I researched on rapid flood inundation mapping and modelling approaches across large-scale data-scarce regions under the guidance of Prof. Basudev Biswal (IIT Bombay) and Prof. Christoph Rudiger (Monash University), integrating the outcomes into the research framework at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. At CSIRO, I map the impact of coastal catchments on surrounding coastal and marine waters using deep learning based inversion models and optical remote sensing imagery.

In short, I study large-scale physical and biogeochemical processes governing freshwater, coastal, and marine systems. I am particularly interested in bridging fundamental process understanding with practical applications, by translating research into scalable tools and actionable insights that support sustainable environmental management, informed decision-making, and the long-term resilience of aquatic ecosystems.
