Slipshot is a game idea in which the player is placed within a very cold environment. The ice surrounding them makes the ground slippery and difficult to move on at times. However, they are also able to use that lack of friction to build up large amounts of momentum in order to complete platforming challenges. The game is three-dimensional and first-person, with a genre between puzzle game and platformer. The former will involve trying to open doors by finding buttons and triggering events that progress the story (for example, finding a valve that will cause hot water to flow through pipes, melting an ice sheet that blocks the way forward), while the latter will involve utilizing the ice floors to gain momentum to make jumps normally impossible in addition to simple jumping from one platform to another. To aid in both of these tasks, the player will be given tools over the course of the game that augment their normal abilities. The first and most important of these is the Aeroblast. This is a device that propels a wave of air in a direction, which then propels the user in the opposite direction. This is the main way to get momentum on slippery floors and is also useful for solving some puzzles (a fan may need to be rotated in order to trigger a mechanism).
The current plan for the Slipshot prototype is to create at least three levels and a demo area, in which I can test the features of the game. The three levels will have a focus on mechanics over visuals, with some things left untextured until such time as I am able to provide art or models for them. The game currently does not have a narrative backing, but that could be implemented given some time, after the main mechanics are polished.
