One of the things I love to do with this blog is to use my science background (I have an M. Ed in science education and used to be a middle and high school science teacher) to create new play recipes that are safe - and if possible, that are edible (I love the idea of creating sensory play that is great for all ages so that babies and toddlers can join their siblings in play without having to miss out on the fun). So far I've developed a Safe/Edible Glow Water, and Edible Mini Water Beads (with no choking hazard!), and an Edible Pretend (Melting!) Ice Cream Dough. We love to play with slime and gak around here and one of my toughest recipes to develop was this one - a totally edible and chemical/borax free slime. It's no cook, super easy, and takes less than five minutes from start to finish! I'm super proud of it (and spent many hours experimenting in our kitchen to get here) and I hope you all love it as much as we do!

Like any great slime it's suuuuper stretchy!

 It oooooooozes.

You can grab it with two hands and just pick it right up off a table.

It feels so soft and slightly cool (in that way that slime always does)...sometimes you just gotta wrap your entire forearm in it.

As S will tell you, it always helps to make crazy faces when you're playing with slime. :)

So so so fun!

For the first time ever, X was able to touch our slime (here he's just over a year - at that age I still didn't trust him not to taste, so he had to sit out during former slime plays). He had a great time poking it with his fingers then slowwwwly lifting them up and watching the slime fall over and over.

Are you ready to make your own? Awesome. You will need:

This basil seed (which we also use to make our Edible Mini Water Beads)Cornstarch (or cornflour if you are in the UK)WaterFood coloring (optional - we used Neon Green here)

Measure 1/4 cup of basil seeds into a bowl and add one full 16oz box of cornstarch (cornflour). Mix them together (kid hands are really good at this part). Add food coloring (if desired) to 2.5 cups of water. Add the water to your cornstarch and seed mixture and stir well. I find that it's easiest to do this part with my hands. You will ultimately end up kneading the slime like bread dough as over the span of 5 minutes, the seeds will begin to absorb the water and it will begin to thicken the mixture. If you find any clumps of seeds while kneading, break them up with your fingers. Once the slime is completely uniform feeling - you're good to go!

Where do you find Basil Seeds:

The best place to find basil seeds is in an Asian or International Specialty Food Store: Our local Asian Specialty stores all carry bags for $1 and they are in the spices section

Here is a listing on US Amazon

Here is a listing on Amazon CA

Here is a listing on Amazon UK

Here is a listing for Australia

The above links are by no means exhaustive - feel free to Google around yourself. Any online spice specialty store is likely to carry these! :)

When you're done playing with your slime, store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Ours lasted for a little over a week. You may find that you need to knead your Edible Slime briefly before play each time to break up any clumps that may have formed.

UPDATE: We have created a new slime recipe for those of you who can't find Basil Seeds where you live. The new slime will work with chia or flax seeds and if all else fails can be made seedless as well. Click here if you need an alternate No-Cook Edible Slime recipe.

Butter slimes get their name from the fact that they look, feel, and spread just like butter! Butter slimes are typically made with some type of air dry clay to create that buttery and spreadable consistency

Cloud creme slime is a super creamy and smooth texture created by adding instant snow powder slime in juuuust the right way! Cloud creme slimes are made with instant snow powder to give them that spreadable and squishy texture perfect for slime newbies and anyone looking for a calming, low-maintenance slime experience!

Clear slimes are just that - slimes made with clear glue so you can see through them. This makes them great for adding charms, glitter, or other add-ins! Clear slimes can be a bit more tricky to start off playing with than other slimes, but once you learn how to handle your clear slimes they are a great addition to your slime collection

1. Place 1 tablespoon of water in a small plastic cup. Add  teaspoon of borax. Mix until as much borax dissolves as possible. This is your borax solution. If you would like your slime to be a certain color, add one or two drops of food coloring to your borax solution.

As you stir the borax and glue solutions together, the mixture becomes thick. It also attaches to the popsicle stick. When you pull slowly, your slime will stretch. However if you pull quickly it will break. Slime will slowly flow making it seem like a liquid, but it can also bounce which makes it seem a bit like a solid.

Water is an important ingredient in slime. Water helps the polymer molecules slide past each other so that your slime can flow. If you let the water evaporate, your slime will end up like a solid piece of plastic.

Try making other samples of slime with different amounts of water and compare them to your first piece of slime. In each sample, follow the instructions to make the slime that you followed before, but change the amount of water you add to make the glue solution.

Put on your goggles. Be sure to read and follow all the cautions on the borax box label. Keep your slime away from carpets, fabrics, furniture, young children, and pets. Store it in a sealed zip-closing plastic bag when you are not playing with it and wash your hands after playing with your slime.

Place your cursor inside the 'slime-smart-quit routine and type M-x edebug-defun. Then exit Emacs as you normally would. You should then be prompted by the Emacs lisp debugger edebug. It's a pretty easy debugger to use (type ? for help).

Here's what I feel is a better solution that specifically ignores only SLIME buffers. It doesn't actually kill the processes if the user aborts the kill-emacs command, nor does it require waiting for slime to asynchronously exit gracefully.

Slime mold or slime mould is an informal name given to a polyphyletic assemblage of unrelated eukaryotic organisms in the Stramenopiles, Rhizaria, Discoba, Amoebozoa and Holomycota. Most are microscopic; those in the Myxogastria form larger plasmodial slime molds visible to the naked eye. The slime mold life cycle includes a free-living single-celled stage and the formation of spores. Spores are often produced in macroscopic multicellular or multinucleate fruiting bodies that may be formed through aggregation or fusion; aggregation is driven by chemical signals called acrasins. Slime molds contribute to the decomposition of dead vegetation; some are parasitic.

Most slime molds are terrestrial and free-living, typically in damp shady habitats such as in or on the surface of rotting wood. Some myxogastrians and protostelians are aquatic or semi-aquatic. The phytomyxea are parasitic, living inside their plant hosts. Geographically, slime molds are cosmopolitan in distribution. A small number of species occur in regions as dry as the Atacama Desert and as cold as the Arctic; they are abundant in the tropics, especially in rainforests.

German mycologist Heinrich Anton de Bary, in 1860 and 1887, classified the Myxomycetes (plasmodial slime molds) and Acrasieae (cellular slime molds) as Mycetozoa, a new class. He also introduced a "Doubtful Mycetozoa" section for Plasmodiophora (now in Phytomyxea) and Labyrinthula, emphasizing their distinction from plants and fungi.[3][4] In 1880, the French botanist Philippe van Tieghem analyzed the two groups further.[4] In 1868, the German biologist Ernst Haeckel placed the Mycetozoa in a kingdom he named Protista.[4] In 1885, the British zoologist Ray Lankester grouped the Mycetozoa alongside the Proteomyxa as part of the Gymnomyxa in the phylum Protozoa.[4] Arthur and Gulielma Lister published monographs of the group in 1894, 1911, and 1925.[5][6] e24fc04721
