PATIENT RESOURCES
To ensure accurate results and a proper diagnosis, small sensors will be placed on your head, face, chest, and legs. These sensors monitor important information such as brain activity, eye movements, heart rhythm, breathing patterns, and leg movements while you sleep.
Soft belts will be placed around your chest and waist to measure breathing effort, and a small microphone will be positioned near your neck to detect snoring. All equipment is non-invasive and designed to be as comfortable as possible while allowing you to sleep normally.
If enough information is collected during the study to diagnose sleep apnea, your sleep technologist may initiate CPAP therapy during the same night. CPAP, or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, delivers a gentle, steady flow of air through a mask worn during sleep to keep the airway open.
The air pressure is gradually adjusted throughout the night until breathing disturbances and snoring are reduced or eliminated. This process is performed under continuous technical monitoring and can only be completed safely and accurately in the sleep lab.
