SLEEP DEFICIENCY
Sleeping is a basic human need, like eating, drinking, and breathing. Like these other needs, sleeping is vital for good health and well-being throughout your lifetime. The body clock typically has a 24-hour period. Sleep deficiency, defined as engaging in less than 8 hours of sleep, is a general term to describe a state caused by inadequate quantity or quality of sleep, including voluntary or involuntary sleeplessness.
The demands of academic life often lead students to sacrifice their sleep in favor of studying, socializing, excessive screen time, or other activities. However, sleep deficiency can have serious consequences for learning, focusing, and retaining information. As a matter of fact, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 2 out of 3 high school-aged adolescents aren't getting enough sleep, and the situation seems to be getting worse. A graphic illustration depicts two students at school; one is actively engaging in class after getting a full night of sleep, and the other is slumped over while scrolling on their phone, exhausted and sleep deprived.
In addressing this issue, we, the Wake Renewed a Grade 11 Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) students of Speaker Eugenio Perez National Agricultural School (SEPNAS) came up with a solution to practice good sleep hygiene habits that will surely help improve and prevent having a sleep deficiency. This includes educating students, parents, and teachers about the importance of sleep and how we can prevent it. We will also be conducting surveys and research studies to gather data on the sleep habits and patterns of students to better understand the extent of the issue, and tailor interventions accordingly.
By prioritizing sleep and making healthy lifestyle choices, students can benefit greatly. It can improve memory, focus, and decision-making skills and protect overall health by enhancing immune system function, lowering the risk of chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, enhancing mood and mental health, boosting energy levels, and generally enhancing overall well-being and quality of life.
