The story takes the perspective from the bad guy, the heart of evil. Whereas you first needed to defeat it, you will now need to protect the heart while playing as a boss from the spire. You will need to hunt down heroes as your favorite boss and protect the heart. If you can manage it, you can also take down Neow to save the heart for good!

The gameplay of this mod is not all that different from the original Slay the Spire. You pick your boss and start bashing heads as you gather cards and try out new builds. I had the feeling that most of the new boss characters are balanced. The new events are great and also address you as a ruler of the spire. However, the gremlin group character was not made for me, as I cannot even defeat the first boss with them!

The graphics of Slay the Spire downfall are amazing. The new cards that have been added for the bosses would have taken an insane amount of time to create, the animations that the bosses use are great. The mechanics also change how some bosses function, one of the bosses can hide in a shell while another can light flames.

But Downfall's real attraction is the titular game mode. In a Downfall run, you instead play as one of Seven villian characters and fight your way down the spire, encountering the heroes from the base game as you go. That's right, you can finally take control of the slime boss and its little dapper hat. The downfal villains are a bit more complex than base characters, so it's a pretty fun way to jump back into the game if you're a lapsed player.

However, the main draw is the downfall mode. Players typically work their way up the spire defeating monstrous bosses, but in Downfall, players take control of a Boss and work their way from the top to bottom.

As explained by the Steam page: Instead of engaging in a Normal Run, you may now play in the alternate Downfall Mode, as one of seven Villain characters (with more to come!), and protect the spire from those who would harm it.

The main feature of the mod, however, is the titular Downfall mode. This mode turns the game on its head by placing you in control of the bosses that guard the spire. Slay would-be heroes as one of seven villainous bosses that each have their own unique arsenal of cards and mechanics.
