The Slavens Elementary Band Program is available to all 4th and 5th grade students at Slavens K-8 (Denver, CO). Our fabulous band program has continued to grow since it's small beginnings to include over 70 students each year. Band students are encouraged to grow not just their instrumental techniques but their understanding of how music changes our lives and world.
Our students perform in the community many time throughout the year. In addition to our winter and spring concerts, you will see us performing the National Anthem with the DU Pep Band at a Pioneers basketball game, performing chamber music at Stella's Coffee House, taking a field trip to Metro State University Music Department and livening up the playground with our Halloween Flash Mob. Our band students have been selected to participate in the DPS Citywide Honor Band, have performed at the Colorado Music Educators Assocation Conference (CMEA) at the Broadmoor Hotel and worked with avant guard musician Walter Thompson, the founder of Soundpainting.
In 2015, we received a grant from the Bringing Music to Life foundation, which gave us ten instruments for our students to use. We are always looking for more instruments, so please feel free to donate your unused instruments to Slavens! We are grateful to FOSS for supporting the band program by offering scholarships to students in need, as we believe music is for all! Beginning Band meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:15-8:15 a.m. Intermediate Band meets Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Slavens elementary band is led by Joni Anderson and Lauren Skinner.
