Satellite Workshop of INTERSPEECH
Overview
The 9th Workshop on Speech and Language Technology in Education (SLaTE 2023) will be held in Dublin, Ireland, on 18-20th August 2023 as a satellite workshop of Interspeech 2023.
SLaTE 2023 will run for two days with a third day for social activities for those who wish. This year, the second day of the workshop will be jointly run with the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Special Interest Group on Under-resourced Languages (SIGUL) satellite workshop.
Core SLaTE Areas:
- Speech technology for education
- Natural language processing for education
- Spoken dialogue systems for education
- Applications using speech and/or natural language processing for education
- Intelligent tutoring systems using speech and natural language
- Development of language resources for SLaTE applications
- Assessment of SLaTE methods and applications
Workshop Program
Day 1 (Aug 18): Core SLaTE Sessions
Papers are invited on all the core SLaTE topics listed above. We especially welcome contributions on the future of Speech and Language Technology in Education, e.g. mobile learning, serious gaming, virtual reality, social media (networks), etc. In addition, we would like to invite demonstrations of systems.
Day 2 (Aug 19): Joint session with SIGUL 2023
Papers are invited on the same core topics, but focusing specifically on the following two themes:
1. Educational Technologies and minority/endangered languages
2. Educational Technologies, Disability and Inclusion in the minority language context
Presentations illustrating tried and tested approaches are particularly welcomed, as are demonstrations of particular systems related to the two special themes.
Questions which might additionally feature in discussion:
Has educational technology a key role to play in
the preservation of the endangered language?
the inclusion of those with disabilities?
Are different approaches in technology-building required in the case of the endangered language?
What are specific challenges for the under-resourced languages? …and potential solutions?
Multinational vs an indigenous approach? To what extent can development be left to the multinationals?
The role of the community (language communities, educationalists, disability groups) in all aspects of the design and development of applications
Disability – how to include the minority within the minority? Technology as a key to inclusion
The role of the linguist – are they important and why?
Day 3 (Aug 20 - optional): Social outing and dinner near Dublin - details to be announced

Therefore, please comment out \interspeechcameraready from the template.
At least one author from a paper must register and present at the workshop.
All papers submitted to SLaTE 2023 must be original contributions that are not currently submitted to any other conference, workshop, or journal, nor will be submitted to any other conference, workshop, or journal during the review process of SLaTE 2023. In all such paper submissions, any use of prior material should be cited by a reference to the source of that prior material, including one’s own work, i.e., if an author uses earlier existing material, whether from one’s own work or that of others, that work should be cited in the paper’s list of references. (Same as Interspeech)

SLaTE 2023 will be organized by the ISCA's Special Interest Group on Speech and Language Technology in Education (SIG-SLATE). The main aim of SIG-SLaTE is to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry working on the use of speech and natural language processing for educational purposes.
