SLATE DIGITALs TRIGGER 2 is the next generation drum replacement plugin. TRIGGER has a phase accurate multi layered triggering engine. This means that in one instance of the plugin, you can seamlessly trigger multiple samples simultaneously such as a close mic sample, stereo overhead sample, and a stereo room mic samples. Or, mix many direct mic samples to develop your own custom unique sounds. This multi channel triggering functionality allows the user to recreate the sound of natural drums with real multitracked samples. Each sample layer has parameters for customization such as velocity and dynamic control, attack, sustain, release and independent levels. Other features include 2 detection modes, MIDI in/out, automation of detecting parameters, up to 127 different articulations per instrument, up to 127 velocity layers per instrument and up to 127 alternation hits per velocity layer, and a unique "Leakage Suppression" function.

Slate Digital's original Trigger plugin already represented the state of the art, enabling a high degree of accuracy in triggering samples from recorded drum tracks - a common studio technique used to embolden the sound of acoustic drums by mixing them with sampled ones (or even to replace them altogether). Trigger 2 (VST/AU/RTAS/AAX) builds on the precision and features of its predecessor and is a free upgrade for existing users.

Trigger 2 comes in EX and Platinum editions, the only difference being that the former includes a much reduced sample library. You use the plugin by inserting it onto a channel in your DAW and feeding it a drum track containing a single close-mic'ed drum kit element - so, kick, snare or tom mics - that you want to replace. The replacement samples come either from the supplied library or your own collection, and you can now load up to eight of them for velocity layering or simultaneous triggering, rather than the six of v1.

Initial setup tweaking begins with the Detail knob, which should really be called "Threshold", as it sets the input level at which the triggering takes place. The Leakage Suppression feature is handled by feeding the target track into Trigger 2's left input and the source(s) of the problem bleed into the right input - useful in ensuring that strong snare hits coming through the kick drum mic don't get misinterpreted as kick hits, for example. The engine intelligently analyses the difference between the two to suppress the bleed on the target signal.

Leakage Suppression isn't new to version 2, but the engine has been improved to make triggering more accurate, and the Sensitivity knob can be used to make even greater distinction between grace notes and bleed. It's a resoundingly successful system - in our testing, it handled a snare track on which the hi-hat spill seemed louder than the delicate snare detail with aplomb.

The trigger signal can be further refined using the low- and high-pass filters, which are useful for rolling off general boom and rumble from loose toms and kicks, or for cutting out top-end transients from bleeding hi-hats on the snare, thus tightening the triggering accuracy. With a range up to 100ms, Retrigger is the final refinement tool, setting the minimum time that needs to pass before the next trigger event is allowed through, thus preventing unintended flamming and stray double hits.

Once you've got your triggering set up, you can focus on the dynamics. As mentioned, each of the eight sound slots can be assigned a velocity range for grading softer and harder sounds. Each slot also has an ASR envelope and a knob for scaling the dynamic range of the replacement sound relative to the level of the trigger signal. It takes time to set all of this up, but the quality of results are absolutely amazing.

There's also an impressive new noise gate feature, driven by the detected hits but applied to the dry, mic'ed signal (which can be blended in with the triggered sound with a dry/wet mix control), enabling incredibly tight and accurate gating when set up correctly. Also new for v2 is MIDI input/output.

Each slate slab undergoes quality control to detect possible defects before being assigned to a particular use. Quality control, performed manually by an expert, has the drawback that it is subjective and aggravated by the possible effects of fatigue. Furthermore, experts need specific and costly training. There is, therefore, a need to develop a more reliable automated passive (non-intrusive) system. In its product specification section, the Spanish UNE-EN12326-1 standard [1] defines the defects that characterize roofing slate. Roofing slate quality, furthermore, has been the subject of a number of studies [2,3]. The defects analysed in this study are described as follows:

Bearing in mind the information extracted from the UNE standard, the most restrictive slab slate size for all the defects listed is estimated to be 0.5 mm length- and crossways and 0.1 mm in terms of thickness.

The system was configured so that each slate slab would be fully included in the images created by both the 2D and 3D systems, with the FOV greater than the slab dimensions. Furthermore, the 3D laser camera viewing field (and the laser angle) was established in such a way that it could account for surface defects up to 7.5 mm over the mean height of the slate slabs.

Images are captured in response to a command issued by a trigger that detects the passing of the slate. The conveyor belt is configured for a maximum speed of 30 metres/minute, and acceleration and deceleration ramps are also configurable so as to make the prototype as similar as possible to a future industrial application. The application is not affected by changes in speed thanks to an encoder, installed in the motorized conveyor belt roller, responsible for varying electric pulse frequency according to the speed of the belt.

Slate classification to date has typically been performed manually by experts, which implies human subjectivity that can be aggravated by fatigue. In addition, slate experts need very specific and costly training.

The results of our study demonstrate that slate defects can be detected automatically using our hybrid 3D-2D laser scanning system. One important defect, the quartz filament, was excluded but will be studied in future research (in terms of identifying a trend line in the slate, typically a whitish tone). The model was tested in real time as a prototype.
