The ESP-Based Dust and CO Detectors for Exhaust Emissions

Currently, Thailand is facing a problem of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution, which is compounded by the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) gas as a component in all regions of the country. The main cause of the PM2.5 problem is attributed to a high volume of particulate emissions from vehicle exhaust pipes. This not only affects the environment but also poses long-term health risks. In light of this issue, the project team has undertaken a study and research on Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) technology, an electrical dust collection device.

Phototaxis of the Paramecium bursaria varies with the wavelength of light.

Paramecium bursaria is a protozoan that symbiotically inhabits Chlorella within its cells. And it is known to be phototactic. We have studied the behavior and growth rate of P. bursaria when exposed to different wavelengths of light, and the growth rate and absorption spectrum of Chlorella within P. burusaria in our experiments. And as a result, red light, which is absorbed by single Chlorella, was not absorbed well by Chlorella inside P. burusaria cells. So in this year's study we decided to investigate whether P. burusaria was responsible for the lack of absorption of red light. In the experiment, we used P. burusaria and P. caudatum without chlorella and observed their behavior when exposed to LED lights (red, blue, white, yellow, and purple) 5 cm away from the specimens for 10 minutes to see if they were phototactic.

To explore the effect of fucoxanthin on the death of oral cancer cells

Many people around the world are diagnosed and die of oral cancer every year, but the causes of oral cancer death are different. Fucoxanthin is a natural medicine that has been widely studied in recent years. It has been proven to have anti-cancer effects in colorectal cancer and breast cancer. This study analyzed the effect of fucoxanthin on native oral cancer cell lines OC2 and OCSL. It was confirmed by MTT assay that it can cause the death of two oral cancer cell lines, and it has better efficacy when the concentration is above 60 μM. Secondly, by observing CHOP and Bax proteins by Western blot, it is speculated that the death of oral cancer cells caused by fucoxanthin may be related to the apoptosis induced by ER stress.

BUY GREEN

Nowadays, awareness about the environmental impact of products we use has greatly increased. We are planning to develop an innovative application, which enables consumers to assess the carbon footprint of products by simply scanning their identification code while shopping.   According to the well-known Reputation Institute, only 40% of shopping choices is determined by quality, while 60% by other factors: sustainability, ethical conduct, workers treatment and transparency. Our project will help consumers in their choice, firms in increasing virtuous behavior, and the environment by reducing carbon footprint.   We are going to explore the functions of this application and the web technologies we used to create it, starting with 3 important international companies and taking into account factors which could influence their impact on the environment. It is only a prototype but we hope our idea will be developed into a useful tool for people who care about our planet.

Inhibitory Effect of Antibacterial Sanitary Napkins on E.coli Growth

Sanitary napkins are frequently used items in women's lives. Improper use may lead to the risk of infection in private parts. Among the sanitary napkins on the market today, some will advertise their antibacterial effect. Therefore, we would like to discuss whether there is a gap between these sanitary napkins and ordinary sanitary napkins regarding the bacteriostatic effect. And what is the difference between each brand in the antibacterial effect? There are two experiments in our study. First is to compare the growth of E.coli between ordinary sanitary napkins and the bacteriostatic sanitary napkins which come from the same brand. Second is to compare the growth of E.coli among three different brands of bacteriostatic sanitary napkins. We hope that through our experiments, we can promote women's health and well-being .
