If you want a portable, all-in-one music station that plays discs and streams wirelessly, choose SKYANS CD Player; if you need high-fidelity open-back audio with a retro aesthetic for stationary listening, choose Moondrop Old Fashioned 40mm.
• SKYANS CD Player: Strength is its versatility as a standalone portable unit with built-in speakers and Bluetooth; trade-off is the reliance on physical media formats like CDs and AA batteries alongside its rechargeable option.
• Moondrop Old Fashioned 40mm: Strength lies in its premium open-back soundstage and modular design for audiophiles; trade-off is the lack of portability since it requires an external wired source and offers no built-in battery or speaker.
• Who each pick is for: The SKYANS is ideal for collectors and travelers who need a self-contained player, while the Moondrop suits home listeners prioritizing sound quality over convenience.
The SKYANS CD Player stands out immediately because it does not require a computer or a smartphone to function. It is a complete ecosystem in a single green enclosure. With its built-in HiFi speakers, this device brings music to life without needing any external headphones or amplifiers. This makes it an excellent choice for someone who wants to pop a disc into the player and hear rich, immersive sound instantly. The inclusion of an LCD screen adds a layer of utility, allowing users to see track information and playback status clearly, which is something many modern digital players have abandoned.
For those who appreciate the tactile nature of physical media, this unit supports CD, CD-R, and CD-RW formats, ensuring compatibility with your existing collection. The ability to play MP3 files from these discs means you aren't limited to older audio standards. Furthermore, the wireless capability via Bluetooth allows you to pair it with other devices, bridging the gap between old-school formats and modern connectivity. Whether you are in the living room, the garage, or even in the car using the auxiliary input, the SKYANS adapts to your environment. Its lightweight construction, weighing only 280 grams, ensures it is easy to carry from room to room.
However, this device is not designed for everyone. If you are looking for a sleek, minimalist aesthetic or a purely digital experience, the bulky form factor and the requirement for physical discs might feel outdated. Additionally, while it has a Type-C cable for charging, the fact that it also utilizes AAA batteries suggests a need for constant power management if you plan to use it away from an outlet for extended periods. It is best suited for the nostalgic listener or the parent looking for a robust, kid-friendly headset solution that doesn't rely on fragile electronics inside a phone. It is particularly relevant for anyone searching for bluetooth earbuds for big head scenarios where a larger, more durable device is needed, though here it serves as a speaker system rather than earbuds.

The Moondrop Old Fashioned 40mm takes a completely different approach by focusing entirely on the purity of the audio signal and the comfort of the user. As an open-back headphone, it is engineered to provide a wide, natural soundstage that closed-back designs simply cannot replicate. The 40mm large dynamic driver with a three-layer rigid-flex composite diaphragm is optimized for this open architecture, delivering high damping coefficients that result in clean, detailed tones. This is not a gadget for casual background listening; it is a tool for critical listening where every nuance of a recording matters. The frequency response spans from 20Hz to 32kHz, covering the full spectrum of human hearing and beyond, ensuring that high-resolution tracks sound exactly as the artist intended.
Comfort is another pillar of this design. The telescopic headband and multi-axis swivel hinges allow the headphones to adapt to various head shapes, including those of adults with larger frames. The earcups feature leather or high-quality plastic materials, which contribute to the "old-fashioned" yet premium feel. The detachable nature of the earcups and the 0.78mm 2-pin connector system mean that this headphone is modular. You can replace cables or even upgrade drivers in the future, extending the lifespan of the product significantly. This level of modularity appeals to enthusiasts who view their gear as an investment rather than a disposable item.
Despite these advantages, the Moondrop is strictly a stationary device. It lacks any built-in battery, speakers, or wireless capabilities. It must be connected via a 3.5mm jack to a dedicated amplifier or a high-quality source. If you are looking for sports earbuds for big head, this is not the answer; the open-back design leaks sound and offers no isolation, making it unsuitable for noisy gyms or outdoor activities. It is also not designed for travel due to the lack of a carrying case in the standard package and the fragility of the open-back structure. This headphone is for the dedicated home listener who has a quiet space and values sonic accuracy above all else. It fits perfectly for those who want kids headset for big head alternatives that prioritize long-term durability and superior audio fidelity over trendy features, assuming the child is an audiophile willing to sit still and listen.
• Portability: Choose SKYANS CD Player if you need to move your music around the house, take it to the car, or travel; the Moondrop is fixed to a desk or listening chair.
• Sound Isolation: Choose Moondrop Old Fashioned 40mm if you want an immersive, wide soundstage for private listening in a quiet room; the SKYANS has built-in speakers that leak sound and offer no isolation.
• Connectivity: Choose SKYANS if you want Bluetooth streaming or the ability to play physical discs without a phone; the Moondrop requires a wired connection to an external source.
• Power Source: Choose SKYANS for its dual power options (rechargeable battery plus AAA backup); the Moondrop draws power directly from your source device.
• Durability & Modularity: Choose Moondrop if you value a build that allows for cable swaps and component upgrades; the SKYANS is a sealed unit designed for ease of use but less repairability.
• Audio Fidelity: Choose Moondrop for high-resolution, open-back clarity with low distortion; the SKYANS offers good quality for a portable unit but is constrained by its speaker design.
• Fit for Larger Heads: Both units accommodate larger head sizes well, but the Moondrop's adjustable telescopic band and swivel hinges offer a more customizable fit for big head users seeking a secure seal.
• Ease of Use: Choose SKYANS for a "plug and play" experience with built-in controls and an LCD; the Moondrop requires pairing with a separate amp or DAC.
In my opinion, I would buy the SKYANS CD Player for daily versatility and the Moondrop Old Fashioned 40mm for dedicated listening sessions. If I had to pick just one based on the specific needs of a buyer torn between them, I would lean toward the SKYANS CD Player if they need a device that works independently, especially for someone with a big head who finds standard headphones uncomfortable. The ability to play physical media, stream via Bluetooth, and output sound through built-in speakers makes it a far more flexible tool for modern life. However, if your priority is pure, unadulterated sound quality and you already own a good amplifier, the Moondrop is the superior choice for the audiophile in your home. Ultimately, the SKYANS wins on utility, while the Moondrop wins on performance.
Yes, the SKYANS CD Player features Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to pair it with most wireless headphones or speakers, in addition to its built-in speakers and 3.5mm jack.
While the headphones have a sensitivity of 109dB/Vrms, they are open-back and benefit greatly from a dedicated amplifier or DAC to fully realize their frequency range and dynamic potential.
No, the open-back design means sound will leak out and outside noise will come in, making them unsuitable for sports or noisy environments where isolation is required.
