Ski The Northeast
For NYC Metro and Hudson Valley Skiers
Hudson Valley, Shawangunks and Catskills
Hudson Highlands - Local parks offer opportunities for XC skiing, and Fahnestock Winter Park is a full Nordic center with rentals and groomed/track-set trails, at about 1000 feet elevation.
Shawangunks - Minnewaska State Park and Mohonk Preserve are beloved cross country ski destinations a couple hours' drive from New York City. The Shawangunk Ridge's 2000+ ft elevation catches more snow than the Hudson Valley below to the east.
The Catskills - Great backcountry skiing when there's enough snow, within three hours' drive from NYC. High ridges reaching over 3,500 ft elevation. Good downhill ski areas like Belleayre, Hunter, Plattekill, while Bearpen Mountain offers groomed cross country ski trails. Slide Mt is the highest Catskill peak at 4,180 ft.
Adirondacks / Tug Hill
Adirondacks High Peaks, One of the great mountain playgrounds of the Northeast USA. Rugged peaks over 4000 ft in elevation, many with slide paths for steep skiing. You'll also find some of the best Nordic backcountry ski destinations anywhere. Mt Marcy is the highest Adirondack peak at 5,344 ft.
Northern Adirondacks
The Paul Smiths area is great for Nordic backcountry skiing—but don't forget the Jenkins Mt Backcountry Zone or Lyon Mountain for downhill thrills. Other areas have beautiful lakes and forests with trails perfect for exploration on skis.West-Central and Southern Adirondacks - Lower mountain ranges and wooded hills, vast forests, pristine lakes. Catches a good amount of snow from lake effect, while coastal storms can provide more snow.
The Tug Hill gets more snow than almost anywhere else in the Northeast USA, thanks to lake effect east of Lake Ontario. Rolling terrain on a high forested plateau 1500 to 2000 ft above sea level.
Taconics-Berkshires / Vermont
The Green Mts of North-Central VT - The birthplace of the ski industry in the Northeast, and still a great playground for winter sports enthusiasts. Mountain ranges soar 2500+ feet above low river valleys. Mt Mansfield is the tallest in Vermont at 4,393 ft.
Southern VT - While everybody knows and loves the big ski areas like Mt Snow, Okemo and Killington, the sleeper snow-catcher is the 2000+ ft elevation Stamford-Stratton Plateau, home to Prospect Mt, the George D. Aiken Wilderness, Dutch Hill and Stratton Pond.
The Berkshires - Great hills and ridges for skiing, including Mt Greylock in northwestern Massachusetts (3,489 ft). Several fine downhill ski areas including Catamount and Berkshire East, some nice Nordic centers, and state forests too.
