There is a growing variety of genres and sub-genres to understand, especially when game developers mix and blend different types of games in new and unexpected ways. Some of the most relevant game categories include:
Sandbox
Real-time strategy (RTS)
Shooters (FPS and TPS)
Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA)
Simulation and sports
Action-adventure
Survival and horror
Sandbox
Sandbox games are often associated with player choice, open environments and non-linear gameplay. In these games, players often have less goals and narrative pathways to peruse, therefore, instead of beating a boss, you may face a variety of tasks you can accomplish in several ways. Examples of sandbox games include, Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto and The Sims.
Shooter (FPS and TPS)
A FPS (first-person shooter) game simulates a human viewpoint, showing what your in-game character sees whereas a TPS (third-person shooter) pulls the perspective back and showcases your entire character and surroundings. FPS games include, VALORANT, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Overwatch. TPS games include: Red Dead Redemption 2, Resident Evil and Fortnite.
Simulation and Sports
A sport simulation game focuses on realistic recreations of "traditional" or "real world" sports. Designers attempt to make sure all the different game elements, from the art to the physics, all accurately represent the act of playing, or watching the sport. Sports simulation games include, EA Sports FC 24, The Madden Series, F1 Manager 2023, The NBA 2k Series and Hattrick.
Action-Adventure
The action-adventure game genre is a video game hybrid genre that combines core alements from both action games and adventure games. Action adventure games require many of the same physical skills as other games, but may offer a storyline, numerous characters, an inventory system, dialogue and more. Action-adventure games include: Elden Ring, and Assassins Creed
Communication in esports provides the ability to exchange information, ideas and emotions with your teammates, opponents and audience. The two main communication types are verbal (speaking, writing) and non-verbal (gestures, body language). Formal communication uses in-game terminology, informal communication uses slang, additionally, it can be either positive or negative, positive communication could be praising or encouraging teammates whereas negative communication could be blaming someone or trolling.
Using appropriate language to speak to people can greatly affect the mood of them, alongside helping to improve chemistry. Being respectful and polite, using an appropriate tone and etiquette, avoiding unnecessary messages and offensive behaviour whilst acknowledging and responding to them, all factor into player moods and team chemistry.
Teamwork and communication are essential within esports. Both can influence your individual performance, reputation and enjoyment of the game. For example, being spoken negatively to, or about, will usually cause a decline in confidence, affecting performance and decreasing enjoyment. Skills, knowledge and strategies can all be improved through teamwork and communication from coaches, teammates, mentors, and even opponents.
The best way to improve communication and teamwork skills is through evaluation of performance. Self-evaluation can be done by reflecting on your own performance through replays, statistics, or logs. Peer evaluation can be done by asking for feedback from teammates, coaches, teammates or viewers through surveys or VOD reviews. Expert evaluation can be done by seeking advice from professionals, whether this be coaches, players, analysts or mentors, again through VOD reviews, reports or sessions. Evaluation of performance allows you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, alongside providing guidance and support.
There are many physical attributes both required, and desired for an esports player. Some of these include coordination, reaction, dexterity and strategic mindsets. Having strong hand-eye coordination is a crucial aspect to perform at a high standard, players need to move quickly and precisely, aiming and reacting to various situations in-game. Your hands and fingers need to be able to respond quickly to the visual information you are receiving from the game. Coordination can be improved through practice and playing of games, improving over time. Having a good reaction time is also cruicial within esports. Being able to react faster than your opponent gives you a higher chance of winning a duel or achieving something faster than them, for example, if you are to see your opponent first in a first-person shooter (FPS) game, you have a higher chance of killing them before they kill you, if you respond and react quick enough. This can also be improved over time, practicing and playing games will help you to have faster reaction times as you will become more used to the pace needed to react to a situation. Physical attributes are needed in all games, especially in esports. There is no specific game where physical attributes do not matter, yes, some are less important than others but they are still required for all games. For example, VALORANT, a fast paced shooter game, requires fast reaction times and good hand-eye coordination whereas, a slower paced game, for example, Terraria, would require patience.
There are two types of skills in games, macro and micro skills. Macro skills are the primary skill set relative to the context, in this case, esports. Micro skills are the small yet specific skills needed to improve.
Macro skills in esports include, map awareness, rotational play, objective control and ability timers. In first-person shooter games, all of these are huge aspects for winning games. Take VALORANT for instance, with there being seven maps available to play in competitive play, knowing your way around the map is extremely important when wanting to find information on your opponents locations. Strategies such as rotating around the map is very important if you are an attacker, and you find you are pushing into a place with most of the enemy team present, you may want to rotate to a different place as ideally, you want to push to a site where there are less people to fight, increasing your chances of gaining control of the map. If on defence, and you gain information as to where the attacking team are, rotating to catch them and stop their push would help you win games.
Micro skills in esports include, individual mechanical play, the ability to hit skill shots and reaction times. Individual mechanical play is essential to improve in all game types, mechanics include, precise shooting, movement, ability usage, crosshair placement and strafing. Take FIFA (part of the simulation and sports genre) for example, you will use mechanics to move your player around the pitch, controlling their every movement. You will use their "abilities", or skills available, depending on the skill level of the player to keep possession of the ball. In Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (part of the tactical first-person shooter genre) you will need good reaction times to both see and react to your opponent before they do, the goal being to kill them before they kill you.
In conclusion, both macro and micro skills are needed to improve within esports. Macro skills being the "more needed" skills to play the games, micro skills being the desired skills to improve within the game. Every game requires macro and micro skills, no matter the genre or whether it is an esports game or a casual game.
Depending on what component you are wanting to improve, there are many training methods available to use. Training is also very game-specific, for example, movement in VALORANT and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive 2 are very different, you cannot go from one game straight to another without there being some differences in in-game performance, depending on what movement you are used to.
One of the best and most effective training method is simply playing. You cannot improve within a game if you do not play often enough. Most professional player spend more than 8 hours a day practicing their skills and another 6-8 hours playing with their team. Most teams have regular scrim sessions, scrims are where professional teams play against one another outside their competitive organization to train and develop new strategies. The more a team practices against professional teams, the more their skills will improve. Scrims are an essential training method for professional esports players, it allows themselves and their coaches to see where improvements need to be made for tournament games.
Esports players do get days off, however with the industry being so competitive it is rare they will go a day without playing their chosen game. A players' coach will usually organise their schedule, setting up scrims, practice, training and days off. Without a dependable coach, training sessions may lack, causing players to not get the practice needed to improve.
Aside from constant practice, VOD reviews for generic games and aim trainers (AimLabs/Kovaaks) for shooter games, are the two best training methods to help you improve, in my opinion.
Aimlabs offers a comprehensive set of tools to improve aim, regardless of the FPS being played. There are official Aimlabs tasks and playlists that are created by both the developers and the community to help improve all aspects of aiming. There are tasks specifically designed for flicking, tracking, speed, perception and cognition, allowing you to track progress as you play. At the end of a task, you are presented with detailed aim analysis, providing information about accuracy and reaction times alongside presenting a personalised dashboard, letting you to see where improvements need to be made.
Aimlabs comes with many benefits, from boosting speed and accuracy to practicing game-specific skills. For example, if you are struggling with mouse control on VALORANT, it can be difficult to focus when you are under pressure, with Aimlabs you can slow everything down and work on your skills in a controlled environment. Aimlabs can help you pinpoint an area of weakness and improve outside the game. For practicing game-specific skills, one of the biggest advantages of Aimlabs is the custom settings available to adjust training scenarios for an individual game. In game settings, you will find profiles for hundreds of popular shooter games (Apex Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, VALORANT), this way you can practice your aim and accuracy at exactly the right sensitivity for the game you are wanting to improve in.
VOD (video-on-demand) reviews are a valuable tool for self-reflection and gameplay improvement. Within esports, reviewing gameplay is a commonly and widely supported practice. Coaches and players realise it is a valuable practice for in-depth analysis, strategic planning and evaluating gameplay. A VOD review is a part of a training practice where a team watches their match footage to establish their mistakes and correct them for learning and growth. VOD reviews may take place daily or a couple times a week, depending on the teams' coaches targets.
VOD reviews are one of the most effective methods of esports coaching and training methods. Conducting a good VOD review requires knowledge about how watching replays impacts performance. A fresh perspective on gameplay can help players to separate themselves from the first-person perspective by watching their game footage. As players will have a limited view of what is happening through their POV due to a variety of factors, VOD reviews will allow the coach and players can engage in thorough analysis from multiple perspectives, giving them the strengths and weaknesses of their performance. Analysing VOD reviews allows the coach to make essential adjustments to the team's strategies. Using the reviews the coach may reanalyse the team composition and assign proper placements for team members to gain the best results in the next match against the same opponent.
In conclusion, there are many training methods available to help improve within esports. Actively playing your chosen game is the best way to improve overall skills, however, if you are wanting to improve components such as aim, movement, or strategies, there are options available to do so. Aimlabs, Kovaaks and VOD reviews are only a few of the options.
Developing training methods are one of the best ways to improve components in-game. Watching VOD reviews or establishing a training schedule, or training before going in to a competitive game will help you to improve, yes, it will take time to notice these improvements but over time, sticking to your schedule or simply going on Aimlabs for 10 minutes before going into a competitive VALORANT game, for example will help you to improve. Being able to see your strengths and weaknesses in different components will let you you further establishing training methods and understand where improvements need to be made.
Each player needs a role depending on an esports discipline, each position has its responsiblities and tactics. Without knowing the role of a player, it will be challenging for an ordinary viewer to understand the logic of their actions.
Take Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (FPS shooter) for example. In CS:GO there are five main roles, entry fragger, in-game leader, lurker, support, and Coach. These roles are similar to as they are in VALORANT, except VALORANT roles depend on what in-game role (Sentinel, Initiator, Duelist, Controller) is being played.
Role - Entry Fragger
The main job for the fragger is to provide the best positions for their teammates by diverting their opponent's attention towards themselves by actively moving around the map. An entry fragger focuses enemy fire on themselves to allow their team to position themselves in areas of the map in order to defeat the enemy team. This role is suitable for a strong-willed player who loves fast and aggressive gameplay, alongside willing to sacrifice individual statistics in order for their team to succeed. In VALORANT, this role is primarily for a "Duelist" as they have the utility and abilities to be able to pull off the strategies and gameplay of an "entry fragger".
Role - In-Game Leader
The job for the in-game leader is to coordinate the teams' actions, analyse the opponents play, and select the necessary tactics needed. The in-game leader, or IGL, plays an essential role in the team's morale. They must command clearly and coordinate the players with their voice, while keeping cool-headed and self-controlled. A good understanding of the map is essential for this role. In VALORANT, this role is often played by a "Controller" or "Initiator" as they can oversee their teammates actions, put plans in place without being too involved in the fast-paced strategies.
Role - Lurker
This role is often called the "rat" due to their main task being to gather information on the map for the team to retreat or attack to based on shadows, sounds, and environments. As a result of these lurks, the game can be significantly influenced by the outcome of the round. In VALORANT, this role is often played by the "Sentinel" as their utility is best used to stop flanks or control a site but is not the best for going onto site with the rest of their team.
Role - Support
As the name suggests, the goal of the support role is to help teammates. They move along with the entry fragger in the first seconds of the round, to cover, and then stay in position (on the bombsite) and wait to gather information for the rest of their team to work from. The support must be adept at handling smokes in order to blind the opponent or hide in the direction of their team's advances. In VALORANT, this role is often called a "Controller".
In conclusion, there are many roles required to put a well-established and organised team together. The most important team for a team, in my opinion is the support role. Some teams play without an in-game leader, for example Paper Rex (professional VALORANT team) do not have a dedicated IGL, and instead let the entire team work out strategies depending on how the enemy team plays. And other teams play without an "entry fragger", for example G2 Esports (professional VALORANT team) do not play with a "Duelist" on the map Icebox.
I believe the most important role for a team is the support role due to no teams being able to play without them. You can play without an "entry fragger" or an "in-game leader", however, you and your team will struggle to succeed without the support role. Many teams often have two support roles as they are so strong and crucial to a teams success.
Adapting to game updates and changes is a critical skill for an esports player. Learning and understanding how to quickly adjust to changes can give you an edge over your opponent.
When a new update or patch roles out, the first move should be to thoroughly analyse the changes, looking through patch notes or update summaries provided by the developers usually detail the alterations made to the game, such as character adjustments, item modifications, or gameplay mechanic tweaks. Understanding the specifics of the game will allow you to know how these changes will affect your strategies and playstyles that may need adapting. With a clear understanding of the changes and their impact, you must adapt your strategies. Revaluating the current approach and determining if they are still viable is crucial here. You will be required to test new hypotheses and refine your tactics through trial and error until you find the most effective new approach.
Practice is essential in solidifying new game strategies. Using scrims to test out adaptations in a low-pressure environment gives you the opportunity to assess the practicality of the new strategies and make further adjustments as needed. Reflection is the key to adapting effectively. After implementing new strategies and practicing them, reflecting on what is working and what is not working will help you to see what needs improvement.
For example, in a previous VALORANT patch (patch notes 8.0), a new sniper rifle was added, the Outlaw, alongside the maps in rotation were changed. Haven (map) was rotated out, and Icebox (map) was brought back in, with map aspects different to what they were when the map was previously in rotation. These map changes caused a difference in competitive play, as people had to create new and improved strategies on Icebox. Two agents (characters) were also changed, their abilities were altered meaning agent compositions in professional and competitive play had to be changed to fit the changes.
In conclusion, adapting to game updates and changes is a critical skill for an esports player to have. When the patch or update is released, players need to analyse the changes, understanding the new specifics to the game. Players can adapt to these changes through playing often, understanding new areas of the map, new agents and abilities, alongside developing new strategies.
Strategy in games is the most complex when it comes to making decisions that affect team gameplay and how others work, interact, and collaborate with one another. Team games are often the most demanding for teaching strategies because of the necessary mechanic for team based games, this being communication. Communication is an essential strategy within team based games, without it, you will struggle to succeed. Different games will require different levels of teamwork, communication and coordination, knowing the roles, skills and personalities of your teammates, and how they compliment each other is a huge strategy for all team-based games.
All games genres have different hardware, software, and platforms, you need to know what the best equipment, settings and programs for different games are in order to create strategies for different games. All games have demands, challenges and risk, you also need to know what realistic expectations, goals and outcomes of each strategy will be.
VALORANT is a first person tactical hero shooter, developed by Riot Games. It takes inspiration from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, borrowing several mechanics such as, the weapon buy menu, gun spray patterns and inaccurate shooting whilst moving. There are many arguments as to what the best in-game skills are within VALORANT. Some may argue movement and crosshair placement are best whilst others argue having good game sense is the most needed skill, but which of these is the one which will get you playing at a higher standard?
When you watch a professional team play, they most likely have a plan in mind with all the team members knowing how to play out a round. They typically have coaches to help them play out the rounds, with the coaches having knowledge of the best strategies and ways to get in-game advantages over your opponent. There are many strategies used within VALORANT to win rounds, while some strategies may look simple, the reasoning and play-through behind the strategies are not.
Take the map "Breeze" for example. Breeze is a huge map, with two bomb planting sites and a large middle area. Open spaces make it a volatile layout, difficult for even the most skilled players to keep control of. Constant communication and intel is valuable on this map, but making the occasional risky play for control. As the map is so open, a strategy for this map is picking the most ideal agent composition, these would be the agents who can move quickly and clear vast areas without being killed in the process, gathering information when you can with information initiators or slow lurks around the map can dramatically change the strategies in place.
Here are a few strategies on Breeze for both A site and B site (image on the right is the map layout for Breeze).
A Site Push - If the defenders neglect to place an agent in Mid nest, push Mid doors as fast as possible. You may also be able to push through A hall, taking care to position some team members in A cave to catch your agents off-guard.
B Site Push - If attacking B site, make sure to come at the site from both Mid top and B main as the defenders will often react to the B main push, meaning they are less prepared for the Mid top push.
Having a good game plan will allow your team to win more rounds throughout a game. Playing each round differently and working on what has worked previously will help you to do this. Good game plans come with time and knowledge of your opponent's strategies.
VALOPLANT is a website in which you can create in-game strategies for your team, allowing you to use the in-game abilities to showcase how a round will be played out.
Knowing these game plans is good but these can be executed very differently to how they are planned. You must have backup plans depending on how the enemies play. Many professional teams study the tactics of enemy teams, allowing them to see where their weaknesses and strengths are. Plans change throughout the game as different scenarios are brought up.
Having a good team composition will allow you to get more information and build on your round executions
Breeze Map Layout
Game sense refers to the ability not only to be away of enemy positions and available utility but also to understand where and when to move around the map whilst predicting how the enemies are going to play out the round.
Knowing when to use different agent abilities and knowing how to use them at the correct time to help your team, and yourself is a crucial skill to have in VALORANT. You will need to know how to combine abilities with teammates to get the most effective outcome.
Having good crosshair placement and good aim will determine whether you win the fights against your opponent, this ties in with game sense as knowing how to play out a scenario may also determine the win.
Maintaining a good mentality throughout the game will determine how well you play. If you are having a bad game but still maintaining somewhat a good mentality, you may end up performing better whereas if you have a bad mentality, even if you are playing well, may potentially make you play at a lower standard
Many people think game sense comes naturally through playing, whilst this is true, there are ways in which it can be improved. Watching professional players play games may help improve game sense as you can see how the best teams play out a scenario. However, the best way to improve game sense is to simply play. As you play, your game sense will improve over time, and you will learn how you should/can play out different scenarios.
The main component within VALORANT is the vast range of abilities available to use. The abilities are what makes VALORANT different from other first-person shooter games. Understanding different agents and their abilities will help you develop more skills. Utilizing online guides and videos from the community will help to learn more advanced tactics and skills. Practicing ability lineups and setups in custom games will further help develop a wider understanding of agent abilities.
Having good aim and crosshair placement will allow you to win your fights against your opponent. As VALORANT is a first-person shooter game (FPS), good aim is needed to get to a high rank. Some may argue to get to a high rank, this is not needed as game sense is much more important but if you know how you can play out a scenario but cannot deliver the performance needed, there is no point having good game sense. This can be improved through play time and knowing where to place your crosshair to headshot people before they can shoot you.
Maintaining a good mentality throughout your game is a must. Professional players constantly need to have a good mentality, or they do not perform at a high standard. Due to VALORANT matches lasting a long time, many peoples mentalities get ruined later into the game, especially if they are losing and as VALORANT is a game where you cannot stop mid game to walk around, there aren't many ways to improve this mentality if it is broken. After games, take breaks and regain the mentality needed to win your next game.
Developing skills in VALORANT is a process that requires consistent practice, learning and team coordination. Players must focus on improving their mechanical skills, such as aiming, agent abilities and game sense, through daily training routines and aim trainers. Game sense and map knowledge is crucial and can be improved through studying map layouts (ValoPlant can help with this) and playing different roles to gain a wider perspective can help with game sense. Using agent abilities and utility involves practicing specific lineups and guides from the community. Players can develop all of these skills through targeting their weaknesses, and improving their strengths with consistent practice.
FIFA 23 is a football video game published by EA Sports. It is the 30th instalment in the FIFA series that has been developed by EA Sports. It has been listed in the Guinness World Records as the best-selling sports video game franchise in the world. Like any other esports game, there are many skills required to be good at this game. These skills include tactical skills, game sense, mental skills, adaptibility and more.
When you watch a professional team play, they most likely have a plan in mind with all the team members/individuals knowing how to play out a game. They typically have coaches to help them play out the games, with the coaches having knowledge of the best strategies and ways to get in-game advantages over your opponent.
One of the biggest components in FIFA 23 is building your team and using a formation that suits your team. Each formation has different strengths and weaknesses. Alongside formations, there are different attacking and defending settings that suit your formation and playstyle. There are four to choose from in each setting. For attacking, in the "Build-Up Play" setting, the four settings include, Balanced, Slow Build Up, Long Ball and Fast Build Up. In the "Chance Creation" setting, the four tactics include, Balanced, Possession, Direct Passing and Forward Runs. For defending, there are five styles to choose from, the Width/Depth Slider, the Balanced option, Pressure on Heavy Touch, Press After Possession Loss, and Constant Pressure. Bare in mind, each tactic has their strengths and weaknesses. If you have an aggressive playstyle, Constant Pressure would be fitting, however this tactic loses a lot of stamina.
Passing and patience are key components in breaking down defences but also having a variety in attacking patterns can keep opponents guessing. Having a passion for the game is what drives most people to constantly strive for improvement, when you have a genuine love for the game, you naturally develop a deep understanding of its mechanics and strategies. Despite FIFA being an individual game, teamwork plays a crucial role in FIFA, having good synergy with teammates can greatly enhance performance. Practicing consistently will help you to further understand each other's playing styles and tendencies, improving coordination on the pitch.
As there are so many players in FIFA, understanding each players' strengths and weaknesses and knowing how to use these effectively is a huge factor to improve game sense in FIFA.
Working effectively with teammates in online modes is an essential part in improving general skills within FIFA. Knowing when to pass the ball and who to pass to will improve gameplay.
Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each formation and adapting your formation based on your opponents formation is a crucial part with tactical skills within FIFA. Alongside this, setting up custom tactics and tweaking said tactics to suit your playstyle and counter your opponents is crucial too.
There are many technical skills in FIFA, some of these include, dribbling, passing, shooting and defending. All of these can be improved through playing. Knowing when to pass, when to move your players to defend etc.
Understanding each players strengths and weaknesses and how to use these strengths and weaknesses effectively is a huge skill to have to improve in FIFA. Being able to read your opponent, adapt and observe their strategies will help you improve as you will be able to see what is working for them and what your weaknesses are. Reacting appropriately to different in-game situations, like counter-attacks and set-pieces is a more advanced skill to work on if you are wanting to succeed in high-level games.
Working effectively with teammates in online modes are essential if you are wanting to succeed. Knowing when and who to pass the ball to, where to move a player to help your teammate score a goal and providing and responding to tactical instructions and feedback will all help improve skills and team performance.
Having the tactical skills within FIFA is a major component to becoming good at the game. Understanding formations and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each formation, adjusting and adapting your formation based on the match situation is a skills that is required in order to improve further. Having custom tactics to suit your playstyle and counter opponents is also a required skill and would help you improve within FIFA.
There are so many technical skills required within FIFA. These skills include, dribbling, passing, shooting, defending and goalkeeping. With dribbling, keeping close control of the ball will help you to manoeuvre through defences, learning and understanding skill moves will further help develop technical skills. With passing, there are three different passing styles, short passing, long passing, and through balls. Short passes are accurate and quick short passes to maintain possession, long passes stretches the opponents defence and finally through balls create goal scoring opportunities as they pass the ball in front of a player for them to run on to. With shooting, finishing efficiently and converting the chances with various shot types, like finesse shots, power shots, and volleys will greatly increase your chances of scoring a goal. Defending also has three styles, tackling, interceptions and marking. Tackling, either standing tackles or sliding tackles will allow you to gain possession of the ball, interceptions will help you anticipate your opponents and cut off the opponents passes to gain possession of the ball and finally, marking will keep close tabs on the attacking opponents to neutralize threats.
Technical abilities, tactical understanding, game sense and communication are all in-game skills that require comprehensive assessments to improve. Tactical evaluation requires analysing of their formations, custom tactics, and in-game adjustments to counter opponents. Regularly reviewing match replays and using in-game performance metrics, and seeking feedback from teammates and coaches will all contribute to the development of in-game skills.
