Skeld 

Skeld is a contemporary folk ensemble that blends Nordic and Celtic traditions with a fusion of classical, modern, and funky influences. At its core, the group appears as a trio, Sonja Tuomela (Violin), Christine Townsend (Violin) and Matt Begg (Double Bass). After meeting as part of the Kings Chamber Orchestra, they have taken their individual experience of folk and combined it in a new exciting project. The aim is to create a soundworld that connects old melodies with a fresh perspective, as well as pushes the boundaries of traditional string playing through inventive textures. 

Sonja Tuomela, violin

A London-based freelance musician originally from Northern Finland, Sonja’s playing is shaped by both classical training and a deep-rooted connection to Nordic folk traditions. She was introduced to folk music through the Näppärit movement, founded by Mauno Järvelä, where she developed a strong foundation in folk fiddling and ensemble playing - an influence that continues to inform her approach within the band.

Alongside her folk work, Sonja is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and performs regularly with orchestras and ensembles across the UK. She enjoys a versatile career with projects ranging from studio recordings to musical theatre. 

Sonja’s musical voice within the group reflects a balance between precision and spontaneity, drawing on influences such as Frigg, Dreamers’ Circus, and Gjermund Larsen Trio, as well as a growing interest in folk composition and arrangement.

Christine Townsend, violin

Christine is a versatile and accomplished violinist whose career spans both classical and contemporary music. She has played with most of London’s orchestras, including appearances as a guest principal player with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and is also an experienced chamber musician, known for her sensitivity and musical insight.

Her work extends beyond the classical world into studio recording and cross-genre collaboration. She has been a key violin and viola contributor on twelve albums by guitarist Steve Hackett, with whom she is currently working on new material. Alongside her classical and progressive rock work, Christine has long held a deep affinity for folk music, exploring and nurturing this interest from a young age.

This passion found a natural outlet when she met Matt and Sonja; the connection was immediate, and together they formed Skeld, blending their shared influences into a distinctive and engaging folk sound.
