Yup. That's blood.
How to make your own Skeeter Stopper:
You will need:
A large bucket (preferably 5 gallons or more)
Water
Organic material (e.g., straw, grass clippings, or leaves)
Mosquito larvicide (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) dunk, granules, or liquid concentrate) - this a bacterium that occurs naturally in soil and kills mosquitoes in the larval stage
Add a small amount of organic material such as hay, grass clippings, or leaves to a bucket. This serves as an attractant by mimicking stagnant water where mosquitoes like to lay their eggs.
Fill the bucket with water and allow the water to sit uncovered for 24–48 hours.
Leave the bucket in a shady, outdoor area for 5–7 days.
This allows mosquitoes to lay their eggs and for larvae to develop.
After 5–7 days, add the mosquito larvicide to the bucket according to the product's instructions.
Use Bti-based products, as they are highly effective against mosquito larvae but safe for humans, pets, and beneficial insects.
That's it! You're done! Let the larvicide sit and allow it to kill the larvae.
Safely empty the bucket into the ground or a drainage area where it will not stagnate. Ensure no live larvae are present.
Set up a new "SkeeterStopper" every few weeks during mosquito season to continue controlling the population.
Safety Tips:
That's it! So simple. Now get out there and enjoy summer!
