The department of environmental studies was established in year 1996 at Saheed Kshudiram College with the objective of imparting education on regional and global environmental issues. Environmental studies is a compulsory subject in the present curriculum. Presently there is one faculty in the department entrusted with the job of educating students beyond their syllabus. 

Environmental studies as an autonomous discipline is being offered as an Ability Enhancement Compulsory course (AECC) for one semester (6 months) to all undergraduate students. Students from all disciplines and course are compulsorily required to study the course

After schools, it is now the turn of universities across the country to go green. with the University Grants Commission (UGC) finally coming out implementation of a “compulsory” course on Environmental Studies as per Supreme Court ruling in colleges across the country .

In line with the Supreme Court ruling that directed the UGC to formulate a basic course on environment meant for every college student, the Commission had decided on the formulation of a six-month core module course in environmental studies that could be taught by Universities across the country.

Following the setting up of an Expert committee headed by ErachBharucha  the Director of Bharati Vidyapeeth Institute of Environmental Studies , a Core Module Syllabus for Environmental Studies for undergraduate courses of all branches of higher education was framed.

Aims of environmental education emphasizes the relationship between man and the environment. The primary purpose of environmental education is to impart knowledge about the environment’s importance and to inculcate responsibility towards its protection and maintenance.

Besides, environmental education fosters the skills that enable the attitude and expertise to understand the natural environment, its limitations, criticality, and the essential ways to prevent it from harm.

Therefore , the objective of environmental education is about environmental protection through information and knowledge and developing the skill sets necessary to indentify environmental issues and take steps required to resolve  them.

Environmental education aims to educate young people about the importance of nature and the environment.

It encourages young minds to take responsibility for protecting the natural environment and to develop environmental awareness Incidentally, promoting awareness and a sense of respect for nature leads to a comprehensive understanding of the environment and a reasonable attitude towards protecting it.
