Course Description

Introductory course of the dynamic meteorology. Basic but essential mathematical and physical concepts underlying theory of atmospheric flows will be presented. Applications of this theory to a broad variety of atmospheric flow types will be demonstrated. Basic equations of atmospheric dynamics will be derived and analyzed, but the main focus will be understanding the actual meaning behind the mathematical format. Calculus, differential equations (both ordinary and partial), linear algebra, and vector analysis will be useful to understand the course. Focus will be made on the understanding of fundamental principles of atmospheric dynamics and application of these principles in atmospheric modeling. Some of the material will be covered again and applied in senior-level classes (MET 171A (synoptic) and in MET 173 (mesoscale)).
