Brazilian jiu-jitsu (Japanese: 柔術) was first developed in 1925 by Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., O'Brien, and Hélio Gracie, after Carlos was taught a hybrid of traditional Japanese Jujitsu and Kodokan judo by a travelling Japanese judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda, in 1917.
Judo originated in Japan in the late 19th century as a safe and effective form of physical education and self-defense. It was created by Jigoro Kano, a Tokyo teacher who specialized in jujutsu, an unarmed martial art used by samurai. Kano modified and eliminated some of the most dangerous jujutsu techniques to create judo, which he named "the gentle way".
