Building Your LinkedIn Profile
Practicing & Creating Your Elevator Pitch
Your elevator pitch is a brief introduction to potential employers and connections to tell a little bit about yourself as well as your intentions.
Check out Pomerantz page on Elevator Pitches: Elevator Pitches | Pomerantz Career Center - The University of Iowa (uiowa.edu)
Creating an elevator pitch is all about building your brand. What's a personal brand? It's a quick glimpse of who you are, what's interesting and unique about you, and what you are seeking.
What makes you stand out?
What special skills do you have?
How do you want to sell yourself?
What will the pro want to know about you?
What positive adjectives best describe you?
What have you done that makes you most proud?
Example: “Hi, I’m Melanie Smith, and I am a junior at Iowa majoring in journalism and enterprise leadership.”
Example: “I am seeking a content editing internship with a media company.”
Example: “I see that you are with Amperage. Can you tell me about opportunities with your organization?”
The more you practice, the more confident you will be. Speak it out loud to yourself multiple times before the event to ensure you are prepared and know what you want to say.
What to Wear & What to Bring
Dress to impress!
Wear professional clothing when meeting professionals at our Speed Networking events. (Business Casual)
Be comfortable but presentable. You do not have to wear a suit but do not come in loungewear or workout clothes.
Visit the Clothing Closet Located in the IMU if you are looking for some free professional clothing. (G200 Iowa Memorial Union)
Come Prepared.
Visit our strat comm and print and broadcast page to see the companies who will be represented at our events. Learn about who will be attending and how their opportunities fit your ambitions. Coming with knowledge of the companies you are interested in goes a long way. Write down the names and business of professionals you are most interested in speaking to.
Bring something to take notes on and record the contact information and notes from your conversations with professionals.
Prepare Questions.
What do you want to know about the field they work in?
What challenges do they face in their job?
What does their average day look like?
What’s their favorite part of the job?
What does the company’s culture look like?
What advice would they give a young professional entering the field?
Be prepared to have a conversation; this is not a job interview.
This is also a valuable opportunity to learn about the industry!
