I can truthfully say that I am so glad I chose teamSJL, I wouldn’t have wanted to go anywhere else. The fact that it’s a small school gives it this community and homely feeling; you know a lot more people and are a lot closer with pupils and staff. St John Lloyd open their doors for everyone and are always there to support each other in every possible way. My 5 years at St John Lloyds were incredible, had the best experiences, opportunities, and made lifelong friends. The school is excellent in supporting you to achieve above and beyond your capabilities, allowing you to be successful, they also try to push you in the right directions, guiding you and giving advice. Every year I was given so many sporting opportunities, from swimming, athletics, cross country and netball. If it wasn’t for the PE department pushing me to attend LA hub trials in year 7, I definitely wouldn’t be playing for Wales and Team Bath today, so I’m ever so grateful for having the support from the very first day, allowing me to excel further. Apart from the academic and sporting experiences, STJL are brilliant at opening so many other doors and allowing you to grow as an individual. During my time there, I was also part of the youth speaks team, which immensely improved my public speaking skills and confidence, leading on to becoming head girl, and being able to speak in front of a larger crowd and help organise events. If it wasn’t for the STJL community, I wouldn’t be the person I am today, they opened many doors for me and taught me to always aim high and just go for everything possible. I am currently at Bristol University, studying Dentistry, and I can say that the first 2 months have been amazing.

I joined St John Lloyd in September 2011, and left in July 2016. I look back on my five years there with immense warmth and fondness.
The best thing about being part of #teamSJL is the sense of community. The school is an incredibly supportive environment in which to learn and develop. While there, I forged friendships that, I am sure, will last for the rest of my life.
The quality of teaching was excellent, and instrumental in enabling me to achieve a strong set of GCSE results that continue to stand me in good stead. My teachers took a great deal of interest in my goals and ambitions, and did whatever they could to help me achieve them. For example, when preparing for my GCSE exams or assessments, a number of them took the time to mark additional work that I completed.
I was also given a huge number of extra-curricular opportunities. In Year 10, I travelled to the Château de Warsy in France, developing my French language skills and visiting impressive local landmarks. Additionally, my participation in the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition was uniquely valuable in developing my public speaking skills. I further improved these skills during my time as head boy.
I am currently in my third year of a Law degree at Queen Mary University of London. I have been able to draw on the considerable public speaking experience I obtained at SJL to become president of the Mooting Society (a moot is a mock court case). In January 2020, I competed before the Rt Hon Lord Carnwath JSC at the Royal Courts of Justice in the final of the Landmark Chambers Judicial Review Moot.
My time at SJL gave me a really strong grounding for success. I am incredibly proud to be part of #teamSJL.

I am delighted that I was a part of the St John Lloyd community from September 2014 to July 2019.
The community aspect that forms such an amazing school really made such great friendships for me that I am sure will last a lifetime. Due to the community being small it made pupils and teachers become closer which hugely helped me academically and to grow as a person. I wouldn’t be where I am today without all the support St John Lloyd gave me throughout my time as a pupil there.
The opportunities I was given were incredible. In Year 10, I went to Iceland to further develop my geography knowledge and I visited Cardiff with the welsh department. But not only did I have such great academic opportunities, I took part in the cross county every year from year 7 to 11 and I was also part of the Urdd swimming team which was such a fun opportunity. St John Lloyds P.E department entered me for the Bryn Isaac memorial award twice which I won, the money I received really helped towards my cycling development so I am truly grateful for the teachers who took a great deal of interest in my passion as a cyclist.
During the last three years at St John Lloyd, I was part of the Great Britain Junior Academy which was really exciting however I wanted to still achieve a strong set of GCSE results. #TeamSJL were such a good support network for me as they fully supported my training for my cycling and accommodated my academic needs. I owe a huge thank you to all the staff who did whatever they could to help me achieve my goals.
Currently, I am studying at the Graig Coleg Sir Gar campus where I am studying a BTEC sport science diploma course, which I am thoroughly enjoying and am now in the second year of learning. I am also now part of the Great Britain senior academy and I will be moving to Manchester in January to become a full-time athlete. I wouldn’t be where I am today, studying and pursuing my career if it wasn’t for #TeamSJL. They taught me that anything is possible when you work hard for it.
I attended St John Lloyd from 1996 to 2001. (Yes, that does make me very old now!)
I remember arguing with my Mum and Dad that I didn’t want to go as the majority of my friends were going to a different local school. So, I managed to strike a deal with them, and they agreed that if I wasn’t enjoying myself by the Christmas holidays I could move. Result.
However, very quickly after starting at SJL I came to realise that this would be my home for the next 5 years. From day one I loved it and immediately felt like I was part of a community. Everyone was so friendly, warm and welcoming. I loved that the year groups were small as it meant you would get to know pupils from all year groups, not just your own. I also made friends for life: 25 years on and some of them are still my very best friends and we still reminisce about our time at SJL.
The teachers were excellent. If there was a problem there was always someone on hand to talk things through. They constantly pushed you academically whilst being brilliantly supportive, and occasionally funny!
In fact, it was Dr Bevan, the Chemistry teacher, who told me he thought I could have a successful career in media. (I think he knew Science wasn’t for me!)
I think the biggest shock of all came when I was made Deputy Head Girl in year 11. Everyone was surprised by this (including my parents!) but I was absolutely thrilled and I still talk about this achievement today. I loved the opportunity to be able to represent SJL by participating in events at the school and speaking at various community events, all of which hugely helped build my confidence and communication skills which have been invaluable in my job today.
Since leaving SJL, I went on to do my A-Levels at Coleg Syr Gar and then studied a Media Arts Degree at Royal Holloway, University of London.
I now live in London and I’m an Executive Producer in TV. I mainly make observational documentaries, such as 24 Hours in A&E, One Born Every Minute and Hospital for BBC2. Just recently I made a series for Channel 4 called Losing It: Our Mental Health Emergency exploring our mental health.
My time at SJL gave me the foundations for my future. I couldn’t be prouder to have been part of SJL; it truly is a special place that will stay with you long after you’ve left and will give you memories and friends that will last a lifetime.
Hello, my name is Isabelle Saunders and I'm a past pupil of Saint John Lloyd Comprehensive. Starting at Saint John Lloyd was scary, no one from my previous school went to Saint John Lloyd, however, we all benefitted from the amazing support offered from Mrs Roberts who paired me up with another person who came from another school, and we are still friends to this day!
My time in Saint John Lloyd was absolutely amazing. During my time studying I received the help and support I needed for my educational experience. The teachers in Saint John’s vastly enhanced my experience at SJL better, and wanted to help any way they could. As well as educational support, I received career support where the adviser encouraged my dream to become an actor, and also balanced that by helping me to work on my academic ability. Thanks to this school I received 2 A*’s, 4 A's and 5 B's at GCSE.
Besides academic support, the emotional support I had from the SJL team was brilliant. During my time in SJL, I become vice chair of the school council, which I was a part of since year 7, I was a senior prefect, and I took part in all opportunities I was offered. For example, I took a leading role in Young Business dragons, I took part in the language committee, and I was a buddy. All these experiences enhanced my school life at SJL and helped me develop and prepare for A-levels in History, Welsh and English which I am now studying towards in Coleg Sirgar.
Thank you Saint John Lloyd for all the opportunities and support you have given me. I would recommend any year 6 thinking about their secondary options to choose SJL for a fantastic experience like I had.
I attended St.John Lloyd from 2015 to 2020, and I can whole heartedly say that being a pupil at St.John Lloyd was one of the best experiences of my life, and something I will look back on and cherish forever.
St.John Lloyd helped me grow as a person in so many positive ways from academic achievement to my development of character. I really loved being apart of a small and unique community, with the most incredibly kind and hard working teachers who know you well and are always willing to help you with anything, but also, the very diverse group of pupils which makes the school so special. The small size of the school also allows you to integrate easily, and means that you always have familiar faces around you.
In my time at St.John Lloyd I was very grateful to have been given many opportunities that I have been privileged to receive. Some of these include being apart of Youth speaks team and becoming a language ambassador which both enhanced my knowledge, but most importantly my confidence. These helped me achieve the role of Deputy Head Girl, and I’m sure will help me greatly in life. Furthermore, the many activities such as sporting events and the Duke of Edinburgh Award have all improved my skills and overall school experience.
I can’t imagine who I would be today without St.John Lloyd and the many positive aspects of school life. Other than finding some life long friends and creating so many memories, the immense support and excellent teaching from the teachers and staff have helped me find my strengths and interests which have lead me to study my A-levels in French, Government and Politics, Sociology and Mathematics in my first year at Gower College Swansea, which I have really enjoyed so far.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at St.John Lloyd and am very proud to be apart of #teamsjl!
