Begun in 1956 with Rev. Fr. Columbus as the head, the department of Economics, History and Politics was like a joint family with a single patriarch, the other members being Prof. Sebastian P Joseph and Prof. Jimmy Andrews.

In 1995 this department was upgraded to postgraduate status. Unlike many other colleges, Mathematical Economics and Advanced Econometrics are offered here as optional papers at the PG level.

This department has been producing excellent results at the PG level, sometimes securing 100% first class pass. Most of the years the pass percentage at the UG level is above 95 %. It has so far produced a total of 46 winners in the UGC’s NET-JRF examinations and 28 rank holders in University examination. The Post Graduate department of Economics has a record in securing University Ranks consistently ever since it was ungraded to postgraduate status.
