San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin Scholarships

The San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin is pleased to offer several scholarships to graduating high school seniors and college students. The scholarships are presented at our annual Baccalaureate Service in June. 

Awards

The cash awards range from $500 to $1000. Current scholarships are:

• San Jose Buddhist Church Adult Buddhist Association (ABA) Scholarship

• Buddhist Women's Association (BWA) Lady Takeko Kujo Memorial Scholarship

• Ray and Lucy Matsumoto Scholarship

• Shizue and Sadao Sakai Memorial Scholarship

• Ben and Kimie Sanematsu Memorial Scholarship

• Larry and Lynn Handa Scholarship

• Walter and Chizuko Sano Memorial Scholarship

Qualifications

For the SJ Betsuin Scholarship, immediate family must be a member of the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin (minimum one-year membership). 

For other scholarships, students who belong to a SJ Betsuin youth organization (Dharma school, Jr. Choir, Troop 611, Betsuin Girl Scouts, Jr. YBA) and/or have continuously participated in at least one of these programs for a minimum of 2 years, may apply.

Minimum of 3.0 GPA during the last 3 academic years based on 4=A, 3=B, 2=C grading system (except for the Matsumoto, BWA and Sano scholarships which require a minimum 2.5 GPA).

Application Instructions

1. Register at the Registration Form (https://forms.gle/1feNfmQqFngZvRGAA). You will receive a email from "sjbcb.scholarship@gmail.com" with a link to your private Google Drive folder for submitting your Application.

2. Download and fill out the application form below. (It may be electronically signed or you can scan a signed hardcopy). Upload to your Google Drive folder

3. Complete your application by submitting all your documentation to the Google Drive folder. Alternatively, you may email your documentation to: scholarshipcommittee@sjbetsuin.org. If you do this, when the Church Office receives your scholarship application, you will receive a notification of receipt. If you have not heard from the Scholarship Committee by May 9, please call the Church Office at (408) 293-9292 or email the Committee at scholarshipcommittee@sjbetsuin.org. 

4. Please send an official, sealed transcript to San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, Attn: Scholarship Committee, 640 N. 5th Street, San Jose, CA 95112.

5. Following the Committee's selection, all applicants will receive written notification.

Application Deadline: May 2, 2025

Once the due date passes, you will lose access to the Google Drive folder.
