I am an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Appalachian State University. I received my PhD and MA in Psychology from Brandeis University and my BA in Cultural Anthropology and BS in Psychological Science from Western Kentucky University. I was the first in my family to attend college and I grew up in a low income, medically under-served area.
I research how culture influences how we think, perceive, and remember (cognition). How do Appalachians and immigrants to the United States, like my own family, differ from others in how they think? How do our cognitive biases (how we think) change as our identities change?
I am also passionate about the inclusion of underrepresented and non-WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) populations in research, mentoring diverse scientists, and making higher education accessible.
