In the two parts of the Writing paper, you have to show that you can write different types of text in English. In Part 1 you have to complete a compulsory task (essay), whereas in Part 2 a situationally-based writing task from a choice of four (article, email/letter, story ,review).

0–5 marks are given for each of the following criteria: Content; Communicative Achievement; Organisation; and Language. Marks for each of the criteria are combined to give 20 possible marks for each question. There are 40 possible marks for the whole paper.

• CONTENT focuses on how well you have completed the task, in other words, if you have done what you were asked to do.
