SiteBinder ("the app") is a field app for logging boreholes: lithology, samples, in-situ tests, groundwater observations and installations. It is published by Mikolaj Kapusciarek ("we").
In short: the app has no accounts and no servers of ours. It contains no advertising, and no analytics or tracking of its own; the Google Maps SDK used for the map collects some technical data for Google (section 3). What you record stays on your device unless you export it yourself.
What the app stores, and where
Everything you enter is stored only on your device, in the app's private storage. This includes: projects and boreholes; descriptions, depths, samples, test results, water readings and installation details; remarks and photos; the name you type in "Logged by". We cannot see it, and nothing is uploaded to us.
Change history: each change you make is recorded on the device with the name entered in "Logged by" and the time. This history appears in the app and in files you export.
Photos: when you take or attach a photo, a copy is kept in the app's private storage.
Automatic backups: the app writes a daily backup file, and a safety backup before any permanent delete or restore, to its own folder on the device (Android/data/<app id>/files/backups). Anyone with access to the unlocked device and a USB cable can copy files from that folder. These files are removed when the app is uninstalled.
Android backup: if backup is turned on in your device settings, Android includes the app's database and settings (not photos) in your device backup to your Google account. On Android 9 and later this backup is encrypted with your screen lock. A phone-to-phone transfer also moves the app's photos and files. Both are run by Android and Google under your account settings; we never receive them.
Scheduled export (off unless you turn it on): the app copies an export file daily or weekly to a folder you choose on the device. If that folder is synced by another app or service, the copy is then handled by that service under its own terms.
Location
The app asks for precise location only to fill in a borehole's position when you tap "Use GPS", and to show your position on the project map. Location is read from Android's own location service on the device. A position is saved only when you save it with a borehole. It is not tracked in the background and is not sent to us. You can refuse the permission and enter coordinates by hand instead.
Maps
The project map can show a base map from Google Maps. To draw it, the Google Maps SDK downloads map tiles from Google for the area being viewed. The app itself does not pass your borehole data to the map service. The map's "my location" dot is drawn on the device.
Like any app using it, the Google Maps SDK sends Google some data of its own while the map is in use (as Google documents it): device and request metadata, crash reports from the SDK, the device's IP address, a pseudonymous SDK identifier, and map interaction events such as panning and zooming. Google uses this to run and improve its services. Google's processing of that data is governed by Google's Privacy Policy (policies.google.com/privacy). The "Offline" map and your own imported base maps do not contact Google.
Files you import or export
AGS files, PDFs, ZIP exports and backups are opened and saved only through Android's file picker, at locations you choose. Exported files contain what you recorded: descriptions, coordinates, names in the change history, photos in ZIP exports. Anyone you share a file with can read it.
Sharing
We do not sell, share or transfer your data, because we never receive it. Data leaves the device only when you export or share a file yourself, when the map is shown with a Google base map (section 3), or when you choose an export folder that a cloud service syncs (section 1).
Deleting your data
Delete individual boreholes or whole projects in the app. A safety backup is kept on the device for 30 days, so an accidental delete can be undone; older safety backups are deleted automatically. Uninstalling the app, or Android's "Clear storage", removes everything the app stored, including its backups. Files you exported elsewhere are not affected.
Children
The app is a professional tool and is not directed at children under 13.
Security
Data is protected by Android's app sandbox and the device's own encryption and screen lock. We recommend using a screen lock on any device used for project data.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new effective date.
