INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVE NOISE CONTROL

Active Noise Control (ANC) is based on the superposition principle by utilizing additional secondary sources to generate “anti-noise” of equal amplitude and opposite (180 degrees out of) phase that cancels the undesired primary noise, resulting in quiet residual noise. Read more.

QUIET ZONE CONTROL OF MOBILEPHONE SYSTEMS

Mobilephone users often need to make phonecall in noisy environment which makes it difficult to listen to the far-end user voice from the small mobilephone's loudspeaker. This project implemented ANC system to the mobilephone to create quiet zone at front side of mobilephone using the existing front loudspeaker, microphone, and rear microphone. Read more.

ANTI-SNORE ELECTRONIC PILLOWS

An electronic pillow developed in this lab provides several healthcare functions including noise reduction, nature sound therapy, sleep disorder detection, and sleep quality improving. The ANC system uses two secondary loudspeakers and two error microphones installed inside the pillow to create quiet zone covering both ears of the bed partner. The same secondary loudspeakers also play the nature sound for residual noise masking as well as sleep therapy. In addition, pressure sensors are installed to provide sleeping disorder and quality measurements. More.

AFTER THE MOMENT WE STOP BREATHING

An collaborative art work with National Taipei University of Art. This project explores the other side of active noise control system as an art of sound. The ANC system establishes a quiet zone area with lighting from the top. Read more or see video.

ACTIVE NOISE CONTROL (ANC) HEADRESTS

ANC headrests are headrests that create quiet zones around users' ears using active noise control technique. Quiet zone is the zone where the acoustic noise has been reduced, so that the users' hearings are protected from excessive noise. The ANC headrests are integrated with audio system to play music that can mask the residual noise in enhancing the psychoacoustics effect, and to perform acoustic echo cancellation in hands-free voice communication system. The ANC headrests are very potential in transportation application, such as airplane seats, train seats, ans bus seats. The demonstration video is available here. The project details are here.

CONTACTLESS HAND BIOMETRIC SYSTEM

Biometrics is automated methods of recognizing an individual based on measurabel biological (anatomical and physiological) and behavioral characteristics. This project developes biometric verification system based on hand geometry characteristics. Conventional hand biometic system is contact based using pegs and platform than can deform the fingers shape, and has hygiene issue. This project offers contactless hand biometric system based on relative geometic parameters, using backpropagation-trained artificial neural network as the classifier. More
