The Science Fair will be split into two strands of competition named after famous British explorers. 

The first, called Livingstone, is for students to re-enact or review something they have heard about or seen. This could be doing an experiment they’ve seen or heard about online, a demonstration, ‘library’ research or informational projects, and/or ‘explanation’ models. If you’re not sure of an idea, then searching online for ‘science fair projects’ may give you some inspiration!

The second, called Shackleton, is a more rigorous project giving a student researcher the opportunity to engage in authentic scientific research or engineering practice and to share their experiences and findings with others. Students may try to recreate an investigation to see if it holds true in a specific environment, for example, or do their own unique investigation into whatever their passions and interests dictate. This will require some careful thought, and as such will be a tremendous learning opportunity to discuss later in university or job interviews. 

If you are undecided about which strand to venture into or what project to do, you can speak to your teachers, who will be happy to talk to you about some possibilities. They won’t pick for you though! You could also read through the Project Categories page and see if any of them inspire you. You may also find it helpful to talk to your parents and any family friends you may have who work in a particular field that you’re interested in. 

Projects will be displayed at the KDU Science Fair on the 17th February 2025. The best projects will then go on to a Science Fair at the Alice Smith School on March 7th for all the top scientists from International Schools in Malaysia!

If you’ve seen or heard of an experiment that fascinates you or that you really want to know more about, then Livingstone is for you! This is your chance to recreate something exciting and interesting, and document your journey along the way. 

If you’re looking to cover new ground and really experience what life as a scientist is like, then Shackleton offers you the opportunity to get deep into a subject. This represents an amazing chance to show universities and your fellow students what you can do!

Yes! You are more than welcome to work in a team of up to four students. Please do keep in mind that this may make it harder for you to organise your project and your communication should be clear in order for you to meet deadlines.
