There's been talk of a cinematic reboot for Todd McFarlane's Spawn for years, with The Hollywood Reporter finally announcing in 2017 that a new film reboot was in the works under Blumhouse. The franchise creator's new scope for the character and his new movie are far closer to that of a horror film. Thus, it's for the best that the undead Al Simmons has found a haunted home at the biggest modern horror movie studio.

Blumhouse has been behind several major horror movies in the past decade, whether that be solo films or reboots of popular franchises. In fact, the production company's frequent wins have been a big part of horror seeing a comeback, especially amid the box office woes of the COVID-19 landscape. Given this reality and the troubles facing more traditional superhero movies, the Blumhouse Spawn reboot may be the best match made in hell.

One of the biggest issues that studios are seeing in 2023 is that major tentpole franchises are underperforming at the box office. This is due to both audience members' spending habits changing in a decade of COVID-19 and the fact that the films are also expensive to produce. In recent years, massive production budgets are instant kisses of death, with movies such as The Flash projected to lose hundreds of millions for the production studio. Even the recent Marvel Studios movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania underperformed, namely due to its budget being the size of Thanos. Many of these films' production costs were inflated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that it's a hassle to even get them made at an affordable level at this point. Thankfully, Blumhouse already has a winning formula to avoid this with Spawn.

Horror movies are notably one of the cheapest genres of film, not to mention the most profitable. For instance, the movie M3GAN cost only $12 million to produce, eventually dancing to nearly $200 million at the box office. Though Spawn will likely be a good bit more expensive than this, Blumhouse's experience means that the budget probably won't get nearly as outrageous as the latest Marvel or DC ventures. Likewise, the horror angle will largely remove Spawn from the superhero movie equation, which will make the movie a lot more marketable given the veritable superhero fatigue now encroaching upon moviegoers.

At this point, the preview blurb reading "the studio that brought you M3GAN" is a lot more enticing than the latest capes and tights feature, so it's for the best that Spawn blend into the former category. With the right combination of spookiness, practical effects and the character's own mythology, Blumhouse's Spawn reboot can easily become a horror film that dominates at the box office and drags more generic comic book movies straight to hell.

Spawn is centered on a black-ops agent who is betrayed and murdered and his soul sent to hell for all the innocents he killed. While there, he makes a deal with a demon who allows him to return to the earthly plane and his wife. However, five years have now passed, and his wife has moved on, while he is a disfigured and superpowered spawn of hell.

Spawn creator and Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane is the very special guest for the Season 1 finale of Behind the Panel. McFarlane discusses making comics history with Spawn, which is now the longest running creator-owned comic book of all time, news on where the new Spawn film is at (including Greg Nicotero's multiple designs for the Hellspawn), and the brand-new wave of DC action figures he'll be producing in 2020.

During the scene in which he breaks into the A-6 armory, Spawn can be seen loading up a short-barreled, stockless version of the Armsel Striker or its American cousin, the Street Sweeper. This weapon is fitted with an ADCO Square Shooter red-dot reflex sight, and it is portrayed in the film as a grenade launcher when it is used by the Clown (John Leguizamo).

EXCLUSIVE: Jamie Foxx is set to star in Spawn, the Blumhouse film that marks the directorial debut of Todd McFarlane from his scripted adaptation of his comic book creation. Foxx will play the character who started out in the comics as Al Simmons, a member of a CIA black ops team who is betrayed twice. After being set up by his cohorts to be murdered with his corpse set aflame, Simmons is double crossed in Hell. He is convinced to become a Hellspawn warrior in exchange for being able to be reunited with his wife. But Spawn finds himself stuck in a demonic creature shell, and that his wife moved on and married his best friend. So this is one pissed-off antihero who attends to dispatching the scum of the city in good and evil battles that encompass Earth, Heaven and Hell.

The comic was huge in the 1990s and was previously turned into an animated film and a live-action pic with Michael Jai White playing the character. McFarlane has long gotten overtures on a new live-action film that could launch a franchise, but he always had creative issues that led him to his own gritty low-budget version at Blumhouse. He expects the budget to be between $10 million-$12 million for a dark R-rated realization of his vision that will stack up favorably from both a creative and financial standpoint.

Spawn is a movie aimed apparently, at the kind of 15-year-old boys who don't get out much, unless to loiter vacantly in video arcades or by comic book racks. Indeed this particular toxic mutant avenger from hell originates from the Image Comics series and is already a successfully merchandised "superhero". The entire film looks like a protracted video game.

By most of the standards usually applied, it certainly doesn't play like a film. From an incoherent screenplay and frequently unintelligible dialogue, a plot sketch just about emerges. Covert operative and assassin Al Simmons (White) believes he's acting for truth, justice and The American Way. But the director of ultra secret government agency A-6 Jason Wynn (Martin "What am I doing in this?" Sheen) is in league with Satan and plans to destroy mankind with the ultimate biological weapon.

Cogliostro explains to Spawn that if he uses his power any more, it could result in him being transported back to Hell because the suit will want to return home. Cog tells Spawn he needs to let the anger inside him die, as that is what is causing his suit to morph prematurely in its lifespawn.

Back in 2017, original comic creator Todd McFarlane announced that a new movie based on his human-turned-Hellspawn was in the works at Blumhouse. McFarlane, who is on board to write and direct the film, is also producing with Blum.

One of the launch titles for Image Comics, the 1992 first issue of Spawn sold 1.7 million copies. Originally written and drawn by Todd McFarlane (a number of writers and artists would later take over the title, including issues penned by Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison), the series was one of the most popular and arguably definitive series of the 1990s. At the height of its popularity, it spawned (no pun intended) toy lines, video games and an animated series on HBO, in addition to a 1997 New Line movie that starred Michael Jai White.

Although it was a box office hit, grossing $87.8 million atop a budget of $45 million, the movie was doomed to the nether realm by critics. More than 20 years later, while promoting his latest action film, Triple Threat, out now on video-on- demand, White looks back on his major superhero role with mixed feelings.

White, an actor whose career began in the New York theater scene, is also a martial artist with black belts in Okinawan karate disciplines, including Shtkan and Goju-Ryu. It was these skills that allowed White to inhabit the role of boxer Mike Tyson in the 1995 HBO film, Tyson. That role led White to Spawn, where he played decorated US Marine Al Simmons, who is betrayed by his government and returns from hell as a supernatural being.

In 2009, White created his own cinematic hero in Black Dynamite, an action comedy that paid homage to the blaxploitation movies of the 1970s. Shot in 20 days and with a modest budget under $3 million, the film became a cult hit, spawning an animated series on Adult Swim.

He went on to appear in films such as Platoon, They Live, Men at Work, Marked for Death, and Stars and Bars. He played Kirby in the 1995 film Dead Presidents, and he appeared in the 1995 Spike Lee film Clockers. He followed this up with roles in other films such as Volcano,There's Something About Mary, Pitch Black, Barbershop, Agent Cody Banks, Head of State, Hollywood Homicide, Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London, The Chronicles of Riddick, Crash, ATL, Delta Farce and First Sunday.

He portrayed "Father" in the romantic comedy action film Mr. & Mrs. Smith. At the same time, he has appeared in numerous independent films including the critically acclaimed Requiem for a Dream, playing the role of Big Tim. He has also appeared extensively in television productions since the 1980s and as a regular character Lieutenant Williams on the short-lived television series The Job. He was a regular on another shoot made for ABC entitled The Big House in 2004. David portrayed Detective Jim Crenshaw in the 2010 horror film Chain Letter.[7]

In 2010, David was cast as Max Malini for the NBC television series The Cape.[8] On April 18, 2011, Keith appeared in the 21st episode of season one of Hawaii Five-0 as criminal tycoon Jimmy Cannon. In 2012, he appeared in the horror film Smiley and the science-fiction drama Cloud Atlas. In 2013, David appeared in the controversial drama Boiling Pot which is based on true events of racism. In 2014, David portrayed Command Sergeant Major Donald Cody in the Fox comedy series Enlisted.[9] Later in 2014, David was cast as Elroy Patashnik in the sixth season of the sitcom Community.[3] be457b7860
