In spring 2022, I conducted together with a postdoc and two Ph.D. students a survey on digital name representation at Duke University. In this survey, we found that marginalized groups were disproportionally denied access to buildings, research funds, or misrepresented in records because their displayed names differed from their native, legal, or preferred names. We presented our results to the VP of IT, whose team has since been using our information to make the university more inclusive.
Our survey was supported by the Library head for Assessment & User Experience and the Emerging Leaders Institute hosted within Duke Graduate School.
