Dear students,
Please carefully read this orientation to White Opal simulation.
The simulation will take place at the Parry Center for Clinical Skills and Simulation at the Sanford School of Medicine located at 1400 W 22nd St Sioux Falls, SD 57105.
The SimMan 3G (Laerdal) will be your patient. This video demonstrates the capabilities of the simulator.
Your patient is a 19-year-old female who presents to the Emergency Department after a series of episodes of shortness of breath associated with accelerated heart beat. No specific triggers linked to the SOB episodes but they frequently occur immediately after soccer game. The episodes are self-limited and spontaneously terminate within 1-2 min. She has no difficulty keeping up with her teammates. She has not been seen for this complaint before and takes no medication.
During the activity, your will be working in the interprofessional teams that consist of medical, pharmacy, and nursing students. Below is the list of expectations for the simulation encounter.
Medical students are expected to:
1. obtain focused history
2. perform physical exam
3. order pertinent laboratory and imaging studies
4. treat the patient pharmacologically and non-pharmacologically
5. demonstrate effective team communication and leadership skills
Nursing students are expected to:
obtain patient's vital signs
establish IV access (if needed)
administer medications as ordered
administer oxygen via oxygen delivery systems as ordered
record orders and pertinent historical and physical exam findings
contribute to the team's decision making as appropriate
demonstrate effective team communication skills
Pharmacy students are expected to:
assist the team with selecting the appropriate pharmacological treatment
assist the team with the medication dosage calculation
The encounter will last for 15-20 minutes. After the encounter, a clinical faculty will conduct a clinical debriefing with the team in the simulation room.
Clinical debriefing will be followed with a 30-min basic science, interprofessional (IPE), and program-specific debriefings.
This activity is highly interactive, and the course of the scenario changes each time when you take an action or fail to do so. The simulator will provide you with real time response to the treatment. You can request a “Time Out” to pause the simulation if you need help.
Laboratory and imaging studies, 12-EKG will be provided to you upon request. They will be displayed on a PC or TV set in the simulation room.
Simulation is safe place to learn how to provide patient care within healthcare teams.
Please prepare to the activity by completing the reading assignments and pre-activity quizzes.
After the activity, please use the links below to assess your team's medical student instructor and provide us feedback regarding the activity.
