Project Description: In rural India, where 68.8% of the population lives, transportation infrastructure faces significant challenges. These include inadequate public transport, limited fuel stations, poor last-mile connectivity, and roads unsuitable for large vehicles, which exacerbate economic, social, and health issues, particularly for women. Introducing fossil fuel-based transport risks environmental degradation and health impacts, making it crucial to adopt greener solutions.
The increasing average power availability in rural areas, now at 22.30 hours per day, presents an opportunity to introduce electric vehicles like e-rickshaws. However, barriers such as high upfront costs, local travel authority monopolies, and misconceptions about e-rickshaws exist. This study aims to explore the adoption of e-rickshaws in rural India, addressing transportation gaps and equity issues, and suggesting policies to encourage their use.
