From May 17 to 20, 2022, will take place the 1st International Symposium on Film Production Design, promoted by the Graduate Program in Performing Arts (ECO/UFRJ) and by the Professional Master's Degree in Creative Media (ECO/UFRJ), with the support of the Rio de Janeiro State Foundation for Research Support (FAPERJ) and institutional support from the Research Center in Film Production Design at the Federal University of Pernambuco (NIDAA/UFPE). The goal of the event is to deal with issues related to film production design in an interdisciplinary way, promoting research and collaborating in the training of professionals, researchers and interested parties in the field, as well as discussing the challenges of production design in the 21st century.

Production design participates in the structuring of the mise-en-scène and the creation of atmospheres for film works, making it possible to identify their relevance in works of fiction, videoclips, documentaries, advertising films and other formats and hybridizations. It involves the creative and executive management of a department that brings together scenography, property master, set decoration, costumes and characterization, in addition to supervising teams such as special effects, vehicles, scene animals, among others. As a multidisciplinary field, the area encompasses topics relevant to architecture, design, scenography, cinema, visual arts, among others. Its teaching, within the scope of cinema and film courses, is regulated in Brazil by federal curricular Guidelines, which include scenography and costumes among the skills expected of graduates.

With the rapid advance of digital technologies as mediators in the construction of the image, the field of Production Design is faced with the challenge of adapting to this mediation. Such changes impact image capture, amplifying resolution and light sensitivity, as well as introducing new post-production techniques. With digital color correction, it is possible to change the chromatic information of the captured image (and, therefore, of the materials placed in the scene by Production Design), and with the use of visual effects (VFX), elements created digitally are added to the images. We also understand technologies as mediators of artistic, political and social processes, as well as possibilities of resistance and creation of a new modus operandis in film and beyond.

We invite authors, researchers, students and professionals from the most diverse areas to submit communication proposals at the event, which relate to topics relevant to the Film Production Design, such as:

  • Film Production Design and its multiple activities, materialities and technologies;

  • Aesthetics and theory of film Production Design;

  • Production Design, landscapes and imagery;

  • Poetics and artistic processes in the field of Production Design;

  • History(ies) of Production Design;

  • The pedagogy(ies) of Production Design;

  • Production Design in local and global contexts;

  • Dialogues between Production Design and creative teams of film production;

  • Dialogues between Production Design and image and sound post-production.
