A Symposium in Honor of Professor Olival Freire Jr.'s 70th Birthday

at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences

Federal University of Bahia, Salvador, BA, Brazil

July 25 and 26, 2024

The symposium “History of Science, Science Education, and National Development” will be held on July 25 and 26, 2024, in the auditorium of the Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences at the Federal University of Bahia, in honor of Professor Olival Freire Jr.'s 70th birthday.

Professor Freire is full Professor of Physics and History of Physics at the Institute of Physics at the Federal University of Bahia. He is also the current Scientific Director of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Over the past decades, Professor Freire has made a decisive contribution to the development of the research in History of Science, Philosophy of Science, and Science Education in Brazil. Additionally, through his advocacy for Brazilian science and technology, he has significantly strengthened these fields in the country.

Given the importance of his contributions and his 70th birthday in 2024, a group of colleagues, former students, and collaborators decided to organize this symposium to reflect on his work and the various fields to which he has contributed for decades. The event will feature lectures—both in-person and remote—by researchers in the fields of the History of Science, Philosophy of Science, and Science Education.
