3 Steps to Simplify...
1) Get Prepared!
Why?
Most companies are ready to fast-track through the process to a contract! This is Great News, but it can be stressful!
Requirements and paperwork are generally the same between companies, but they can differ slightly. Be prepared across the board, especially for those wanting to apply for more than one company at the same time.
2) Prepare the following...
On your computer or a cloud drive, make a folder for "online teaching" to store all of these items, making the whole application process easier.
Make a separate folder for each company, keeping things organized.
Below look at the basic areas to prep and feel more confident with low to no stress about applying.
After you fill out the first form, you will be ready!
3) Relax, prepare, and simplify
It's a lot of work but let's keep the process simple
Do not try to be perfect and do not overthink it all
Reduce your stress... start with the 5 basic areas below before applying so you are ready to get applying!
5 basic areas to applying...
1) Paperwork
For most of us, gathering documents means digging, searching, and more! It's best to gather these before you start any application process for online teaching.
Undergrad degree: ready to upload
At a minimum, your Bachelor's Degree. If you have any higher degree, get it, too.
Scan or take a photo, JPG or PNG, some take PDF version.
Crop to the edge and no shadows (you can apply an auto-enhance or sharpen to help legibility)
Be sure your degree earned (BS/BA) is clear on the document text
College transcript: ready to upload
PDF file, scan or take a photo, JPG or PNG
Some companies will take this if your degree is not available.
Some may need it to prove your degree completion or legitimacy.
If you do not have the transcript, then start the "transcript request" process with your school. (Some are free and some are fee.). It's all online and easy.
Identification: ready to upload
A passport is preferred but you may use your Driver's License
Scan or take a photo, JPG or PNG
Crop to the edge and no shadows (you can apply an auto-enhance or sharpen to help legibility)
Teaching Certifications/Licenses: ready to upload
Teacher Certifications - PDF, scan/photo, no shadows, crop tight
TESOL and/or TEFL Certifications - scan/photo, no shadows, crop tight
Some allow PDF upload while others want JPG or PNG file type
Don't have one? No worries! Get your TESOL now, click here. It's $19 and took me 2 days. (Open a browser for the study part, open a browser for the test.)
Resume: for reference
On occasion a company may need your resume or they may ask you to include the last few places worked (as part of their background check too).
Have a recent resume nearby (or keep your LinkedIn profile updated) for your reference when filling out the online form
Signature: optional
You can have a scanned signature ready for some legal documents. PNG or JPG
Each company is different in how they collect your digital signature.
I personally signed a white paper with a felt pen and scanned it and cropped it close.
2) Classroom Set up
First, this does not have to be elaborate. Simple works! Do not get intimidated or overwhelmed with what you see on YouTube of other online teachers. Create YOUR classroom and be YOU!
Suggested resource: video on Lights/Camera/Audio from Teacher Michael
Lighting
Lots of light on you without making shadows
Low Budget: 2 lights, one on each side of you - one can be the room's overhead and another a lamp on the other side
Medium budget: Ring light
High budget: Several umbrella lights.

Background
A clean back wall or corner with two clean walls.
You DO NOT have to use a map, in fact, I discourage it even when you see others with one. You don't want to have the "wrong" map (based on countries and territories) so stay away!
Use half-page or full-page size shapes. Anything smaller is too small!
See the Simple Background setup video (it's good for any platform)
Camera positioning
You want it eye level or slightly higher
do not have it low, looking down on your student
Headphones
Check with the company you are applying with and be prepared either way - Headphones with book mic or earbuds
The headphones with boom mic like a telemarketer type work, but big Gaming headphones are also a winner for teaching younger students, and companies like it (some require it)
Some allow earbuds wired or wireless
Some will allow none with a mic but that is rare.
Sit or stand?
A table or desk to place your computer on.
3) Props and more
You will need props to help you teach! There are some staples that work for all levels and ages, but be ready for times where you will need a custom prop for teaching a certain lesson here and there. Click here to see the prop page
2D props
Paper or cards printed
You can make these easy! See my video on 2D props or a previous video on Props in a pinch
Put them on a stick, see this "stick it" video to help with presenting them
3D props
Magnifying glass
helps grab attention,
what do you see,
let's look and more
Microphone
helps with my turn / your turn
many lessons may have mini songs to "sing" (you lipsync).
you can make one, buy a toy one, or use a real one if you have it
Blocks - letters, other 3D shapes - help them see shapes and increase engagement
Headbands
help your classroom have fun
helps the student laugh and that's a goal for each class!
Be creative!
Stuffed animal or Plushie:
At minimal have a stuffed animal or plushie. This will work well with younger students who have never seen a foreign teacher or talked online in video.
See more on the Prop Page
4) Profile
Most companies will have these required for your profile once you are further along in the application. It is still wise to have these ready beforehand. If you have them ready, then great. If you don't, then it may take you some time, so start now and save stress or inconvenience later.
Profile photo: ready to upload
Basically a headshot photo
Full Color, 250x250 or larger square
Some companies mention a 'LinkedIn' type photo, while other companies are ok with a more fun approach.
Either way - do the following:
Good lighting, not too bright, not dark/shadows
No sunglasses or masks or accessories
Face centered, look forward, smile
Simple background, white or solid color
Feature/Lifestyle Photos: ready to upload
4:3 ratio; Visible entire face
If others are in the photo, you must be center, front, recognizable
full color instead of back and white photos.
A recent photo without excessive makeup, filters, or any horror elements.
Stand out from the crowd
Photo of you traveling, front of rare buildings or art
Petting an animal at the zoo
Doing a hobby (running, biking, photography, sewing, etc)
Maybe a photo of you and your pet
Video Introduction: be ready to do this, See props and classroom
Most companies will give you a guide, not exactly a script, but a flow and timing criteria.
What should I say?
Welcome! My name is Teacher ______.
Showcase some props, TPR, your teaching style, and your class atmosphere.
Let them know you are looking forward to seeing them in the class. Invite them to your class.
Background & Lighting
Bright/natural lighting, simple background, include objects that attract a child's attention.
I suggest you avoid maps. It would need to be consistent with the Chinese educational standards.
Video size & Quality
At least 800x480 in the 16:9 or 4:3 ratio, size should be under 100MB. Please use the highest quality setting on your camera.
About 20-40 seconds
Format
Format should be in Mp4, AVI, or MOV.
Body language
Please be welcoming, friendly, and fun
Don’t forget to smile and use gestures whenever possible (e.g. waving).
Props / Costumes
Be sure to show some!
Wigs, hats, headbands can be fun. Make sure they are not too distracting
Short Bio: ready to use
For all companies, you will need a short bio. Do not worry, there is a basic template, just fill in the blanks.
