4.Chrome Web Store – Single Purpose
Simple Steps Recorder helps users capture and document browser interactions through screenshots and optional voice narration, highlight important information, protect sensitive information using blur, pixelation, and blackout, and generate professional step-by-step reports in HTML and Microsoft Word (.docx) formats for testing, training, documentation, troubleshooting, and support purposes.
5.Chrome Web Store – Permission Justifications
Tabs
The tabs permission is required to identify the active browser tab, obtain page information such as the page title and URL, and communicate with the active tab to perform user-initiated recording and screenshot operations.
Downloads
The downloads permission is used to allow users to export reports generated by the extension. When the user clicks the Export button, the extension downloads the generated HTML or Word document and displays the standard "Save As" dialog so the user can choose where to save the file.
Storage
The extension uses the Chrome Storage API (storage permission) to save extension data locally on the user's device. This includes user preferences, recorded steps, configuration settings, and other information necessary for the extension to function correctly. This data is stored only for the user's convenience and is not transmitted to external servers or shared with third parties.
Host Permissions (<all_urls>)
The extension is designed to record browser interactions and capture screenshots on websites selected by the user. The <all_urls> host permission allows the extension to operate consistently across different websites. Recording only begins after the user explicitly starts a recording session.
unlimitedStorage
The unlimitedStorage permission is required to allow Simple Steps Recorder to store larger test-recording sessions locally, including screenshots, voice recordings, step data, and generated report data. Recording sessions can contain many screenshots and optional audio clips, which may exceed Chrome's default extension storage quota. The Extension does not use this permission for cloud storage or to transmit user data. An application-enforced maximum of 100 MB is maintained for stored recording data.
Commands
Keyboard shortcuts are provided to improve usability by allowing users to quickly capture screenshots and selected screen regions and open toolbar for audio recording and privacy mode. These actions are performed only when initiated by the user.
