Here are five simple tips that have helped me lose weight without resorting to 'dieting':
Reduce your portion size: This may sound obvious, but it is often easier said than done. One simple way to help you eat less is to use a smaller plate. Single plates of all shapes and sizes are available from department stores. Using a smaller plate is a visual reminder to put less food out, but you will still be able to eat all the food on your plate, which is a physiological stimulus that you have eaten enough.
Stay hydrated: Did you know we often feel hungry when in actual fact we are feeling dehydrated? A simple glass of water can stop those hunger pangs. So, before you reach for a snack, drink a glass of water. Also drink water before you eat a meal, this will help fill up your tummy helping you eat less.
Chew sugar free gum: Not only is chewing gum good for your teeth, but it can also help your with weight loss. The simple act of chewing, even though you are not actually consuming anything can fool you body into thinking you have eaten. Also, like when giving up smoking, chewing gum can act as a distraction. There are so many flavours of sugar free gum available that there will be something out there to suit you.
Replace meat in your diet: I'm not saying go vegetarian, if you're not already, but with certain foods like curries or casseroles you can replace meat with a vegetarian alternative. As the flavour for the dishes comes from the sauce and spices, a meat free substitute will bulk up and add texture to a meal, but without the calories and cholesterol contained in meat.
Start the day the right way: Eating a healthy breakfast is one of the most important things you can do. Our bodies are very complex machines and they adjust the way they work and digest food depending on what and how often we eat. Eating a high fibre breakfast kick starts our bodies for the day and makes sure we have enough energy to get us through the morning. Also use the opportunity to drink plenty of water or fruit juice, to make sure you are fully hydrated, which also prevents hunger.
There are plenty of fad diets that work to shed pounds rapidly -- while leaving you feeling hungry and deprived. Many experts say you can do that without going on a "diet." Instead, the key is making simple tweaks to your lifestyle. One pound of fat -- is equal to 3,500 calories. By shaving 500 calories a day through dietary and exercise modifications, you can lose about a pound a week. If you only need to maintain your current weight, shaving 100 calories a day is enough to avoid the extra 1-2 pounds most adults gain each year.
