SIMEC

Integrated Coastal Erosion Monitoring System based on Aerial Photogrammetry

Project Framework

“Another cliff fell, and caught the towel of a surfer who luckily was surfing … said an investigator to the Mayor of a city by the Coast of Portugal..” The Mayor, said:

  • That´s a fact.. we are everyday losing territory to the sea. There is an old fisherman who lives in the Assenta settlement and he says that every night he hears the rocks falling and sometimes with a bang. But what can we do???

  • The investigator replied ... What can we do? Now? I am sorry but now there is little that can be done to predict these events as they happen so slowly but at the same time so fast. But if there is a new and innovative line of thinking in the long term and if we start collecting data today, perhaps future generations will thank us for having started the conditions for them to predict these events. Wouldn't it be great if I now told you that I had 20 years of data collection from this place with me?
