As the time comes for the handing over of Psychology Society to a new batch of EXCO members, we would like to take this opportunity to look back at memorable glimpses of the journeys of the outgoing EXCO members.
The outgoing EXCO members were asked to share their personal narratives and driving factors which helped them find their way to this major — Psychology. The commonality in all their responses was that they had some form of interest and curiosity in human behavior prior to entering university. They also felt that Psychology as a subject of study was more than what meets the eye. They saw it as a learning that could build empathy in individuals and promote introspection. Reading books about Psychology gave them a better idea of the different branches within Psychology and which they had more of an inclination towards.
When asked about their time spent in the society, they unanimously found it fulfilling and nurturing. They all began as members with an interest to contribute, participate and help the society grow. While volunteering for events, they adopted skills and knowledge useful for their academic endeavors and beyond. Additionally, with like minded peers in this discourse community, they found a sense of comfort and forged many strong friendships. Psychology Society allowed them to network and know course mates beyond those they have similar modules with. They found a social circle that enabled them to have fun yet engage in meaningful discussions, through which they attained substantial growth.
As people who have walked down the path before, each of the outgoing EXCO members would like to leave the incoming ones with a piece of heartfelt advice or a candid message:
“You might find yourselves constrained by certain situations placed upon you, but I urge all of you to not give up and don’t let the motivation that spurred you to take up the position in the first place burn out. Take ideas from each other, be true to yourself, but don’t be stubborn.”
