My goal is to depict what’s surprising and otherwise hidden in ordinary daily life.
•Because human beings are primarily visual, I think the visual arts are the best way of doing that.
•Because photography, of all the visual arts, is the most direct and literal, I think it’s best suited to capturing daily life.
•Because much of daily life happens in public, I think street photography, of all the types of photography, offers me the best chance of realizing my goal.
•Single, isolated photos – one image per two-page spread – fail to communicate the urban reality.
•Therefore: use multiple photos per two-page spread.
•However: three or more photos become sensory overload to the audience.
•Therefore: use diptychs – two images per two-page spread – as a happy medium.
Curating the best diptychs
•The two images should be “similar but different.”
–Lighting and contrast.
–Color.
–Facial expressions.
–Gestures.
–Social station: rich/poor, young/old, gender, ethnicity.
