Railroad worker Arnie Westrum is decapitated by an unseen attacker, pregnant Stella Randolph prepares to kill herself but is brutally murdered in her own bedroom, an abusive father Milt Sturmfuller is killed in his greenhouse, and Marty's best friend, Brady Kincaid, is also killed. After Brady's death, citizens form a vigilante justice group. Although local Sheriff Joe Haller attempts to stop the citizens, he relents after Brady's father Herb berates him. Reverend Lester Lowe fails to dissuade the townsfolk from causing further bloodshed.

Marty enlists Jane's help to look for someone with a newly injured or missing eye. She discovers that Reverend Lowe is missing his left eye. Realizing that no adult would believe his story, Marty begins sending anonymous notes to Reverend Lowe telling him that he knows who he is, what he is, and that he should commit suicide in order to stop the killings. Lowe tries to run Marty off the road with his car. When Marty is trapped under a closed covered bridge, Lowe, whose condition has fractured his sanity, tries to rationalize the murders he has committed as doing God's work. Lowe apologizes and moves in for the kill until Marty calls for help from a passerby.

The siblings manage to convince Red that Lowe is connected to the murders and attempted to kill Marty. Red persuades Sheriff Haller to investigate. That night, Haller, still skeptical but desperate to find the killer, goes to Lowe's house and finds Lowe has locked himself in his garage to restrain himself from further killings. Before Haller can arrest him, Lowe transforms and bludgeons Haller to death with a baseball bat.

On the night of the full moon, they wait for the werewolf, who cuts the power to the house and smashes its way inside, attacking Red. The bullet is nearly lost in the melee, but Marty is able to retrieve it and shoots the werewolf in the right eye. The corpse turns back into Lowe before dying. As the trio recover, Marty and Jane say they love each other and embrace, and Jane narrates that although she had not always been able to say it, she was able to say it from then on.

King asked for the werewolf to be plain, and hard to see, in contrast to the hulking monsters seen in other werewolf films and books in the early to mid-1980s, with the result being a creature which looked more like a black bear than anything else and did not really have any identifying characteristics. After seeing Carlo Rambaldi's design, per King's request, producer Dino de Laurentiis was very unhappy and demanded a change, which both King and Rambaldi refused. When pressured to either cancel the film or accept the design de Laurentiis relented and allowed filming to continue with Rambaldi's werewolf suit. A modern dance actor was hired to perform the stunts inside the suit but de Laurentiis was also unhappy with his performance and demanded a change. As a result, Everett McGill, who played Reverend Lester Lowe in human form, wound up acting out most of the scenes in the werewolf suit and was credited with a dual role.[2]

The film was released on DVD by Paramount Home Entertainment in 2002,[4] on Blu-ray in Germany on September 14, 2017, under the name Der Werwolf von Tarker-Mills.[5]Then on Blu-ray in Australia on January 3, 2018 by Umbrella Entertainment,[6] and on Blu-ray from Scream Factory on December 17, 2019.[7] A 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray was released by Scream Factory on December 05, 2023.[8]

In a retrospective review, Felix Vasquez Jr. of Film Threat and Cinema Crazed[16] wrote, "'Silver Bullet' features one of the best climaxes in a horror film thanks to director Daniel Attias, and garners a very entertaining and creepy story that develops beyond a typical werewolf movie. When I think of great horror films, when I think of great werewolf films, and when I think of a great King film, I think of this."[17]

In folklore, a silver bullet is often one of the few weapons that are effective against a werewolf, vampire, witch, or other supernatural beings.[1][2] The term silver bullet is also a metaphor for a simple, seemingly magical, solution to a difficult problem: for example, penicillin circa 1930 was a "silver bullet" that allowed doctors to treat and successfully cure many bacterial infections.

Silver bullets differ from lead bullets in several respects. Lead has a 10% higher density than silver, so a silver bullet will have a little less mass than a lead bullet of identical dimensions. Pure silver is less malleable than lead and falls between lead and copper in terms of hardness (1.5 < 2.5 < 3.0 Mohs) and shear modulus (5.6 < 30 < 48 GPa). A silver bullet accepts the rifling of a gun barrel.[3]

The terminal impact is somewhat speculative and will depend on a variety of factors including bullet size and shape, flight distance, and target material. At short ranges, the silver bullet will most likely give better penetration due to its higher shear modulus, and will not deform as much as a lead bullet.

A 2007 episode of MythBusters demonstrated a greater penetration depth of lead bullets versus silver bullets; the experiment utilized a 250-grain (16 g) lead slug in a .45-caliber Colt long shell vs a lighter, 190-grain (12 g) silver slug fired at closer range.[4] Another MythBusters episode, from 2012, showed that silver bullets are less accurate than lead bullets when fired from an M1 Garand.[5] Michael Briggs also did some experiments with silver bullets compared to lead bullets. After making a custom mold to ensure that the sizes of the silver bullets were comparable to the lead bullets, he fired them. He found that the silver bullets were slightly slower than the lead bullets and less accurate.[6]

Some authors asserted that the idea of the werewolf's supposed vulnerability to bullets cast from silver dates back to the Beast of Gvaudan, a man-eating animal killed by the hunter Jean Chastel in the year 1767.[7][8][9] However, the allegations of Chastel purportedly using a gun loaded with silver bullets are derived from a distorted detail[10] based primarily on Henri Pourrat's Histoire fidle de la bte en Gvaudan (1946). In this novel, the French writer imagines that the beast was shot thanks to fictitious medals of the Virgin Mary, worn by Jean Chastel in his hat and then melted down to make bullets.[11]

An account of a Jmte about were-bears in 1936 attributes bullets of silver as the method of killing.[12] Swedish folklore tends to ascribe silver bullets as a catch all weapon against creatures, as wizards or the skogsr, that are "hard" against regular ammunition.[13][14]

A number of fictional Wild West heroes used silver bullets as weapons, to symbolize their purity of heart. The best known of these was the Lone Ranger in all his incarnations: after solving the problem of the week, he would leave a silver bullet behind as his mark. Clayton Moore, who played the Ranger in the television series, was known to give away silver bullet props, made from aluminum, to fans in the 1950s.[16]

In an untitled early Batman serial from 1939, written by Gardner Fox for Detective Comics issues 31 and 32, Batman declares that "only a silver bullet may kill a vampire," and swiftly forges such a weapon to defeat the coven of vampires who kidnapped Bruce Wayne's fiance.

Over the last weeks, I have been on the road a lot for various engagements with customers as well as for our research activities. In virtually every meeting, the whole area of artificial intelligence and especially machine and deep learning come up as a discussion topic. This is great as I think the AI/ML/DL area is incredibly exciting and I keep being surprised and impressed by the incredible applications and examples that make the headlines on a very regular basis.

At the same time, it is clear from all the discusses that AI is on the top of hype cycle and this is concerning in that the expectation on what AI will deliver are perhaps inflated. Especially those not overly well versed in the concept and underlying technology often start to expound on the fabulous opportunities that their products and services have if we just sprinkle a bit of AI dust over them.

Over the last weeks, I have been writing about the software engineering challenges associated with building AI systems, but it seems that the key message that I am looking to get across is broader than what I have been communicating so far. The core idea is that AI is not a silver bullet. AI is not going to magically solve problems without any significant investments from our end.

For a machine or deep learning model to work well, we need accurate, clean and typically labelled training and validation data, a well designed model, iterations with several alternative designs to figure out which model performs best, reliable data pipelines to hook the model to, monitoring and logging to track model performance during operation, continuous remodeling and retraining to support continuous deployment, etc.

Larry spread his hands. I get what you're saying, Mark. I really do. You think I'm a monomaniacal crank who has glommed onto one convincing theory, and that keeps me from seeing the full picture and appreciating the thorny details. I have two points in response: 152ee80cbc
