Goemba Drametse
The Drametse is eastern Bhutan's largest and most important monastery. Ani Chhoeten Zangmo, Pema Lingpa's granddaughter (some say daughter), founded the monastery in 1511.
The word Drametse means "the summit where no opponent exists." There are 100 monks and Gomchen at the monastery (lay or married Nyingma monks). It is famed for being the birthplace of the Nga Cham drum dance, which is performed at many Buddhist festivals. UNESCO has designated this famous dance as a Masterpiece of Humanity's Oral and Intangible Heritage.
Dzong Trashigang
The Buddhist Monastery of Trashigang is a beautiful dzong perched on a small peninsula overlooking the Drangme Chhu and Gamri Chhu rivers' confluence. Trashigang, also known as the "fortress of the Auspicious Hill," was built in 1667 and dominated the entire eastern region until the beginning of the twentieth century. The outdoor courtyards are home to several tame Jaru (goral or mountain goats).
