Sierra College Earth Week
April 21-25, 2025
April 21-25, 2025
Our Power - Our Planet!
Theme: Our Power – Our Planet!
Festival Date: April 24, 2025
Time: 10 AM – 3 PM
Location: Upper Quad, Rocklin Campus
Overview:
Earth Day is an international celebration observed on April 22nd each year to demonstrate support for environmental conservation, preservation, stewardship, and reciprocity. Celebrated in over 193 countries, Earth Day serves as a reminder that our planet sustains all life and deserves our collective care. While the modern Earth Day celebration began in 1970, cultures around the globe have honored the Earth and its gifts for millennia.
This year’s theme, Our Power – Our Planet!, highlights the critical relationship between sustainable energy and environmental health. We aim to explore the transformative power of renewable energy, conservation practices, and community action in addressing climate change and restoring ecosystems. The theme also emphasizes the incredible power individuals and communities possess to drive meaningful change through collective action, advocacy, and sustainable practices. Join us to learn how we can harness our collective power to create a sustainable future for our planet.
The Sierra College Earth Day celebration, organized by the Environmentally Concerned Organization of Students (ECOS) Club, the Associated Students of Sierra College (ASSC), and the Earth Day Committee, has been a cornerstone of campus life for over three decades. The event will feature interactive booths, workshops, keynote speakers, and community partner exhibitions, all centered on education and action.
Event Purpose:
This free event is open to the public and invites Sierra College students, faculty, staff, and the greater community to join a day of celebration and education. Together, we aim to:
Celebrate the natural world and express gratitude for the resources and beauty it provides.
Educate ourselves and others about the impact of human activity on Earth systems and explore solutions for positive change.
Emphasize our reciprocal relationship with the planet: what we use, how we behave, and what we create affects all life, including humanity.
Share actionable steps to reduce our ecological footprint, guided by the Seventh Generation Principle—the Haudenosaunee philosophy that our decisions should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future.
Strengthen our community connections to work collectively toward a just and sustainable future.
Key Highlights:
Workshops & Activities: Learn about renewable energy, climate justice, sustainable agriculture, and practical steps to reduce waste.
Guest Speakers: Environmental leaders and changemakers will share their insights on harnessing the power of people and planet for lasting change.
Student Projects: Discover innovative projects by Sierra College students that address pressing environmental challenges.
Community Partners: Engage with local organizations and businesses committed to environmental stewardship.
Quote:
“Action on behalf of life transforms. Because the relationship between self and the world is reciprocal, it is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting. As we work to heal the earth, the earth heals us.” —Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass
Call to Action:
Let’s unite our power to protect and restore our planet! Mark your calendars for April 24, 2025, and join Sierra College for a meaningful day of learning, connection, and action. Together, we can create a sustainable future for generations to come.
