Narrative

Inspired by the "Time's Up" and "Me too" movement, I created a set of photos depicting emotions felt during and after sexual assaults, both with the photo itself and the text underneath. Each photograph incorporates honey, a term which men commonly use when talking to women, whether they know her or not.

Portrait

Playing with the idea of what a 'portrait' truly entails, I had the model posing in various odd and interesting ways, and played with my own height compared to hers, getting about 5 feet about her, while also holding a lamp in my hands, to take this photograph. I wanted a surreal, almost nightmarish photograph, and I think I got what I was looking for, especially with the greenness of her eyes being so bright against the lighting, and the severity of her eye contact directly at the camera.

Portrait

I wanted to experiment with different type of lighting, trying to use different, less convential sources. This lampshade might be taking up most of the image, but it reallly gives a soft glow to the models face, leaving her looking more mysterious and somehow angelic with the soft glow of the light on her fingertips.

Landscape

Wanting to create an image that was more dynamic than your common sunset scene, I incorporated a grain to the image, giving it that meloncholy, old-timey feeling. Showing the sun as it was setting on an autumn day was a wonderful and sort of surreal experience. I have never seen such open landscape before, and the sun seemed so big. This photograph shows the meloncholy and vastness of being in the countryside.

In this image, I used a grain to create the same sort of feeling that I wanted to portray in the sunset image, but I used a lighter grain so you could see the dust coming up from the combines in the field. The sense of loneliness of the country I was feeling in this moment really come out in this photograph. The threat of the dust looming in the photograph gives the viewer a tainted view of what is usually seen as surreal and idealistic setting. It chokes the idea of a perfect world and a perfect view.

Landscape

Playing with the textures of wood and the grittiness of the outdoors, I took this photograph of an abandoned barn window. I was pleasently surprised to see that there was another window on the other side, which helped create the lighting that brightened up this image.

Not being Iowa born, I was always fascinated with the midwest, but more so Iowa's obsession with corn. I learned to hate the rolling corn fields that I always wished were waves of the ocean instead. But as I've grown older, I've learned to see th beauty in corn, and hoped to capture the nostalgia that corn fields bring in so many midwesterners, especially when they move away.
