Science in the Evening Non-Traditional Student Society (SIENTSS, pronounced "science") supports Science in the Evening (SIE) students and alumni by providing networking opportunities, advocating for equity in resources, and fostering an inclusive and open environment where all SIE students feel welcome and comfortable. SIENTSS has four goals:
1) Provide community support for post-bacc students in SIE, who often juggle employment, home-life, and school.
2) Serve as a hub to connect SIE students to relevant volunteer, research, jobs, and/or clinical experiences that benefit their chosen careers, specifically those that fit the needs of more mature students.
3) Advocate for equity in resources to SIE students, who have different needs than traditional daytime undergraduates.
4) Act as SIE student liaisons to the Office of Extended Studies/Director of SIE and Student Government Association to advocate for the needs of SIE students.
Science in the Evening started in 1996 through the College of Computer, Mathematics, and Natural Science. Recognizing the need for a community-building student organization that serves SIE students, Samantha Dean and Addie Darling-Mena founded SIENTSS in Spring 2020. SIENTSS has recruited over 80 members since its founding, and continues to grow.
SIENTSS does not restrict membership or discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital status, age, national origin, political affiliation, physical or mental disability, religion, protected veteran status, genetic information, personal appearance, or on the basis of rights secured by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution (For definitions of “personal appearance” and “sexual orientation,” see the University of Maryland’s Non Discrimination Policy and Procedures, https://policies.umd.edu/section/2240/ )
The membership of SIENTSS shall be open to any undergraduate student of the University of Maryland who agrees with the organization's mission
