Welcome to Science in the Evening Non-Traditional Student Society (SIENTSS)!
Science in the Evening (SIE) students have a lot on their plate. Between employment and commitments at home and elsewhere, throwing nightly classes into the mix can be a daunting endeavor. You could be spending your weeknights with friends, family, or a nice bottle of wine. But instead, you're putting your nose to the grindstone in pursuit of a better future. We get it, and we're here to let you know you're not alone.
Whether you graduated from University of Maryland last May or University of Hawaii 20 years ago, you have a place here. Science in the Evening Non-Traditional Student Society (SIENTSS) believes all post-baccalaureate students can achieve their career goals through community support, collaboration within and outside of the classroom, and sharing of resources.
Classes can quickly become transactional. You arrive, gain some knowledge, and leave. However, we strongly encourage you to get to know one another. Every single SIE student has had unique experiences based on their undergraduate institution, area of study, work experience, personality, professional goals, and more. While the majority of SIE students are focused on medical school, many also seek to become Dentists, Veterinarians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and more. Exchange contact info, form study groups, share notes, and review practice questions together. In addition, join us for our networking events. From happy hour to potlucks to pet show-and-tell, we'd love to get to know you.
SIENTSS also fosters a collaborative environment. Unlike undergrad, final grades in SIE are not dependent on one another. In other words, the success of one of your peers does not "bring down" your grade. Rather, SIE students are often graded on a curve against the undergraduate students. And since SIE students are a smaller cohort with a career-oriented focus, they generally have better grades than the undergraduate classes. Therefore, it greatly benefits you to work together and to keep in mind that a rising tide lifts all boats.
